HALP.

I'm trying to plan a vaca with another couple next year and we are running into issues.  Mainly, that three out of the four of us are cool on a sweet all-inclusive resort in Cancun, while Noodle flatly refuses to go to Cancun.  He's convinced it's one big drunken spring break fest.  We want to do an all-inclusive, that's posh enough for us womenfolk while having enough to do for the menfolk, and we thought we found a perfect one in Playa del Carmen but the beach isn't swimable at that partiular resort (there's a swimable beach a little ways away but that's a make-or-break for the wife of the other couple, a swimable beach right on the property).  This one is perfect, but in Cancun.

So has anybody gone  to Cancun (we'd be going the first week in June) and is it really as crazy as they say?  We aren't looking for total zen or anything, we'll definately be drinking and having fun, but we don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of douchenozzles and 18 year olds.

Re: HALP.

  • Dude. Secrets Capri. We go every year. It's freaking sweet. And TOTALLY laid back and relaxing, but it's close enough to Playa Del Carmen that if you want to shop or go out and do something, they provide transportation.

  • So you worked through your problems, then?

I'm sorry, all I can say about this is I would tell Noodle to stop acting like child. Three people for Cancun against one who doesn't want to go wins.

    Sorry, Nuggs. But this.

  • It all depends on your all-inclusive, but I went to one in Cancun, and it was fine, not like spring break.  Maybe if you go a little more upscale you'll avoid all the people trying to drink their money's worth?  Also, the beginning of June is when the school kids are in their final exams, so the young crowd won't be there.

  • I would tell Noodle to suck it up.  If you're not going in March or April, you won't have to worry about spring breakers.

We went to Secrets Silversands in Riviera Maya maybe 15 min south of Cancun and it was beautiful and we didn't have any problems with rowdy people at ALL.  (PIB) The beach was not what you're looking for so I wouldn't recommend that particular resort or a resort within a couple miles of it because we walked quite a bit along the beaches.

Of course, there WAS a swingers' resort just down the beach if you're into that at all.

  • We are working through it with the help of outside sources.  I don't really want to go into it in detail because I don't need to give anymore reasons for peeps to hate on Noodle than I have already.

Honestly, if we are going to be surrounded by a bunch of douchenoozles and 18 year olds then none of us want to go.  Which is why I'm trying to find out what Cancun is like during the summer months.

Fischy - I will mark down Secrets on our list.

  • And yeah, our all inclusive is an adults only because we don't want a lot of screaming chillins around on our vacation.

We've heard the beaches as a whole are better in Cancun than in Playa del Carmen.

Yep.  Honestly I think it will be fine.
  • I have been in Cancun the first week of June. We had no problems at all. You might have a couple of bars that you will want to avoid but you will be fine.

Also, Noodle seems like a wet blanket.  A lot of the time.  Tell him to stop  being so white and uptight!

  • Nuggs, we don't WANT to "hate" Noodle, but most of your posts about him paint him in an unflattering light, without any awesome stuff to balance it out, you know? We only know what you post about him, and from what you post, he doesn't sound like the nicest guy in the room.

Which is why I'm not going to go into detail.  It's human nature to talk about the bad.  Nobody on here spends all their time talking about all the awesome things their husbands do for them (unless it's in a thread started for that specific thing).  Because nobody wants to be a braggart (except for Mandy, apparently, with her AWESUM HUZBIND). But everybody on here has complained at least once about their husbands, either little complaints or big ones.  Noodle does a ton of really great things for me, and I wouldn't have married him if he wasn't a good person.  But we do need to work on our communication and how we interpret what the other person is saying and our reaction following that.  So that's what we're doing.

  • Yeah, well, all I have to say is THEY HAVE A MARTINI BAR.  A bar.  Just for martinis.  And a wrap-around terrace.  And an oceanfront location.  And a steam shower in the bathroom.  And a Jacuzzi.  And an espresso machine.  And your own personal cabana on the beach.  And a tequila bar (DEAR FISCHY THAT'S FOR YOU).  And it's under 3k for 6 nights.

Screw it, I just talked myself into it.  I can talk him into it.

  • I would not stay in Cancun.  Having been to both Cancun and the areas south of there, I would not do Cancun again.  May I recommend the El Dorado Seaside Suites? (that is clickable, by the way) All inclusive, swimmable beach, adults only, lots of onsite activities, and a 20 minute $2 collectivo ride to Playa del Carmen.  They have a variety of hotels to choose from.  Hidden Beach is a nudie resort so you might not want to click on that one.

Oh and I will brag.  My guy is pretty damn close to perfect and when he's not, he makes me these cocktails that lead me to believe he is.  Yum.

    Here's my $0.02.

Mexico can be a drunken wild party. IF you want it to be. Generally, it's not like what you see on TV or those stupid Spring Break shows. BUT, if you're in the bars/night clubs, you can expect some wildness. It also depends on when you go. Any time in February and March? It's going to be a bit louder. January? Should be nice.

I also FAR prefer Puerto Vallarta to Cancun/Mayan Riviera.

ETA: I see you said you were wanting to go in June. I wouldn't worry one bit about loud/spring breakishness.

  • I've been to Cancun in June and the pool was like a high school senior trip.  I am just one for the off the beaten path....and Cancun is WAY beaten.

  • We could stay at the one in Playa del Carmen, and there's a place in Cozumel we like too.  It just seems like the one in Cancun has the best beach and the most bang-for-our-buck.

We wanted to go to Aruba, but didn't feel like selling our ovaries to pay for the damn trip.  Sh*t is expensive.

  • I'd do Cozumel or Playa before staying right in Cancun
    image
  • We loved Cozumel.  I've been there a few times and our resorts had swim up beaches.  There is so much to do there, and so much more that is close.
  • We are looking at the Royal.  They have one in Cancun and one in Playa Carmen (same rooms, amenities, etc).

I have been to PDC eleven times.  And Cancun twice.  Check around for other AI's in Playa.  There are very nice swimmable beaches there!  And yes, Cancun in my experience, is spring breaky.  At the very least, over-crowded with tourists, and you will regularly be waiting in line at restaurants.

check out the forums on Playa.info for some AI recs.  There's an entire board dedicated to it.

    Eleven?? Jealous!

A couple of my friends have stayed at El Dorado Seaside Suites - Riveria Maya for their honeymoon and loved it.
  • I 3rd Cozumel. I've been to the Riviera Maya before and my H had been to Cancun and we both loved Cozumel and would go there before going to the mainland again.

Yeah, my parents own two condos in Playa, so I take advantage at least once a year!
