NWR: Christening gift

I was going to buy a savings bond but they aren't sold in banks anymore and I think the online process is too cumbersome.  What do people usually give besides bonds?

Do I write a check to the baby? The parents?  It's this weekend so I don't have a ton of time to go get something.

Re: NWR: Christening gift

  • They aren't sold in banks?  I have been meaning to get over there to get one for my nephew's 1st birthday.  I tried to do it online, and you're right; it's cumbersome.  The parents have to set up an account for the child.

You could get him a children's Bible.  If you don't have time, you could write a check and put "For Baby Timmy's College Fund" in the note section.
  • nope as of Jan 1 they are no longer sold in banks.  before when you bought them as well you could give your own SSN but have it issued in someone elses name (the ssn is just for tracking) but I believe now you must have the recipient's SSN.

When my kids were christened they got a bunch of crosses and bibles.  The one thing they both really like was a personalized (ie name on the cover) Children's Bible Stories book.  Now that they're 7 and 8 they actually use the present.

If you write the check or give cash, you'll have to hope the parents actually keep it for that use.  I know quite a few that spent the money :(   For the record, every check my kids have ever received has gone directly into their college funds.  They hate me for that now, but they'll appreicate in 10 years.

  • I was juat at a christening for my friend's son on the weekend and I also wanted to get a savings bond but apparently the banks in Canada only sell them twice a year. We just got a new, redesigned $50 bill so I put one of those in a silver piggy bank. My friend loved the gift.

For my nephew's, I got a silver piggy bank and put some cash in it.  My SIL loves it, whenever she finds loose change/dollar bills floating around the house, she puts it in there.  Periodically she takes it to the bank to put in his savings account, she said it's surprising how much money they've been able to add to his savings that way.
  • thanks for the input - i think i like the piggy bank idea so I might do that. :)
  • The only thing I know I received for my baptism was a cross necklace with my birthstone, so I gave my goddaughter a children's book about God, along with a sterling silver penguin necklace with interchangeable jewels in the belly. I love penguins, so when she's older and can wear it, she'll think of me.
