Why get married?

Since you can cohabitate, have sex, and have kids outside of marriage these days, why get married and have a wedding? Even if you did want to get married, why not just elope?

Just wondering!

  • Personally, I wanted a party and all the attention on ME!  What else could be the motivation to spend a bagillion $s on one night?

Also, because people haven't been doing any of these things until now, and just because people can, doesn't mean that all people do.

  • I do not like attention, especially being the center of attention...I wanted the church wedding only to experience it and to have my father walk me down, and so my father had that chance as well. My sister got married in our backyard 16 yrs ago. My brother got married 13-14 yrs ago in his yard (trailer park) they are now divorced but I would be the only one that would actually have that experience and as for the party and the money bit that was more for family and friends and well E-he likes the booze and being around people.

I was actually going to be able to make our wedding under $5000, I didn't have any idea how much the church would be or what we would have to do to marry at the church so without the church, I was at $1500 for the reception and that included open bar. It was awesome and sooo cheap!!

Too bad he's now going to have to wait who knows how long to have that big party but it probably won't be as cheap. (if we get back together)

1- Because ceremonies have meaning in people's live and cultures beyond living together and knocking boots once in a while. You might as well ask why any ceremonies exist at all.

2- When you elope, you still get married. If you are happy about getting married and want to share your joy with others, then you invite those people to your ceremony. Its not that hard of a concept, really!

    1. We want kids and I want everything above board legally. Life insurance, bank accounts, etc. I want each of us to be protected as well as any children we might have protected in case of a death or divorce. Without the kids aspect, I can easily see how someone might choose to never marry. However, I also like the feeling of permanance, although we'd probably stay together even without the paperwork.

    2. We like to throw parties. We're lushes. We dress to impress. Er, sometimes. It's our style to do something nice that people will enjoy rather than something really low-key. But hey, I have no problem with wearing pajama bottoms to the courthouse and getting married that way.

  • The insurance baby!

Honestly, it's a lot easier to get through life with him being my husband in regards to medical situations, insurance, finances, etc. I also noticed a very dramatic shift in people's attitudes once he became my husband instead of my boyfriend.
Then there's that whole romantic love and being together forever ...

    and I <3 him.
  • Beecause a honeymoon registry without a wedding preceeding it is sooo gauche.

Well because I did that with other people too and I actually want this one to know I'd let to spend lthe rest of my life with him.

Besides some states (mine) require you to be legally married for 1 year to adopt... and the insurance. Why the big party? Because my mom cried like I was killing her when we said we wanted to JOP in Vegas. I'm a doormat so I caved

Edit: Wow talk about leaving out important words. Yeah 1 year to adopt.
