White gold

For the ladies with white gold rings, how often do you get it re- rhodium plated?  The only place my ring turns color is on the inside...

Re: White gold

I don't even know what this is.  I've ready about it before, from theknot.

I had my ring cleaned when I got my band made, and then again about a month ago.  Is this something they ask you if you want? Or do they just do it when it's cleaned?

ETA: I didn't know until I read it on theknot.
  • Mine is white gold and an heirloom from my grandmother. I had no idea about the rhodium thing til TK. I asked my grandmother once and she told me she'd never had it done. So I guess it's been about 40 years or so...but I can't tell that it's yellowish looking. I'm sure if I went and had it done, I'd probably be able to tell a difference though. Sorry for not being helpful or answering your question at all.

  • I just got mine re-dipped for the first time, about 6 months after I got it. I thought the only place it was rubbing off was on the back/inside but I was amazed at how much more sparkly it was overall after I had it done! I think I'll get it done again right before the wedding.

  • I had my e-ring replated a year after I got it.  I've had my wedding band for about a year and a half yet and haven't had it replated, but it's definitely due for it.  They say you should do it every 6-12 months just depending on when it needs it.  I'm just too lazy to find my paperwork and take it in, plus they keep it for a week so...

  • I, also, had no idea about this until the knot, and my ring went about 2 years with no issues (unless they dipped it when it was out for a few days being attached to the band, which is entirely possible), but the last time I went to get it cleaned and checked up in January they asked if I wanted it done, so I said yes. It is brighter after that, but I didn't notice it turning yellow before that either.

Therefore, I'm no help. Maybe ask the jeweler how often they recommend doing it, if at all?

  • I'm getting my e-ring dipped a week before the wedding. It doesn't look like it's had any discoloration until I hold it up to my band. Then it's more noticeable.

There is where mine is turning too....I had it done 6months after I got the ring, and it needs to be done before I get married.

I was just curious as to how often people have had to get it done.
  • I'll do it right before the wedding which will be about a year since I've gotten it.  I definitely notice some yellowing on the bottom where it's always getting hit on things, but not on the top or the inside.  Ideally I'd do it once a year, but I'm sure it'll end up being less often than that.

  • Every 6 months. My e-ring seems to turn a little yellow faster than my wedding band, or maybe it's just more obvious because the band is thicker.

Ok cool....I was just wondering if mine was needing it more then usual.  I wonder what makes some people needing it more then others.  White gold is not natural, all it is is the white gold plating on top of yellow gold.  I wonder if some rings have a thicker coating then others.
  • Not all white gold is rhodium plated, so that is another issue. My e-ring is heirloom and wedding band is new white gold, but not plated.

I think I've read that it also has to do with your own hand and body chemistry and what your skin does to the ring.  Also, probably the coating on the ring itself.

  • I  had it done right before the wedding (18 months ago).  It needs to be done again, but I just haven't gotten around to it.  I'm pretty hard on my rings (the boat, saltwater, etc) so I'm sure I need it done more often than others.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I agree. I couldn't really notice until we were purchasing my wedding band. When I put them on together you could definitely notice!

  • Neither of my rings had turned color at all, but when I took them in for their 6 month cleaning in October, she said it was part of their cleaning process. So I guess they'll be replated every 6 months. They were done on-site; took maybe a couple of hours or so.

  • Maybe some white gold rings consist of more white metals then others and the white color lasts longer.  Because White gold is made of gold and white metals.  My e-ring is on the thinner side too.  Its hard to tell if its yellowing, but I agree with others, against the wedding band you can tell.
  • Thanks ladies!  Sounds like I am on track with others.

  • I haven't had to have mine done.  It helps if you don't wear them all the time, especially when you're cleaning or using harsh chemicals.

I agree. I had my ring re-dipped in December (FI bought the ring in March... so 9 months). I didn't notice a change in the ring until I got the ring back. What a difference it made!
  • My white gold rings are over 30 years old. They have never yellowed or been redipped. When I read about this on TK, I asked a jeweler. She said that older rings were not dipped in rhodium, but probably palladium, which does not yellow.

  • Blech.  It's not re-dipping!  It's more like being replated.  They don't just throw the ring in a vat of rhodium.
  • I had my e-ring replated after 2 years. It looked yellowy compared to my brand new wedding band.
