Dumb UPS/USPS question

I've been waiting for a delivery from UPS for 2 weeks now (long story).  Anyway, this morning it was at my local UPS center and I checked again to see if the update said "out for delivery" but instead I see "tendered to local post office".  What??  Since when does UPS delivery to the post office to delivery it to the customer?  I'm gonna be pissed off if it delays my delivery by another day.  Anyone ever had this happen before?

Re: Dumb UPS/USPS question

  • I've never heard of them sending it to the post office.  I have noticed that UPS takes way longer than the mail though, and is generally a lot more expensive.

  • I had this happen once!  UPS delivered it to the USPS and then they put it in the wrong post office box.  So I never got it even after it was delivered to the PO.  Eventually someone realized they had the wrong package and returned it, but it was a PITA.
  • That's why FedEx is the bomb.

Not that I'm biased or anything...... :)

I've never, ever had a package get stolen, but two packages UPS supposedly delivered within a week of each other mysterious never ended up on my porch. Hmm.

  • Fed Ex flies the USPS mail that can't be trucked. I can't remember if UPS does, too.

  • I am a consultant with Tastefully Simple and about a year ago UPS informed us that they are partnering with USPS to deliver smaller packages to ensure a quicker delivery especially in rural areas.

In my experience it actually tends to add a day or two to the delivery time, hope you get your package soon

  • It does happen - if you are in a more rural area - UPS will handle the package until your USPS sorting center and then give it to USPS for "last mile".

There are also occasional spelling situations as well.  When I pre-ordered Harry Potter books - B&N made an arrangement that UPS would deliver to local PO and PO would deliver to my door by end of business on the release date.

That sucks.  I would be pissed.

I sent my Godson a little care package/Halloween package when he was sick, and we went to UPS only because it was in the same plaza as Target and the post office was a few minutes away.  It was $15 to ship what would have easily fit into a cheaper flat rate box, and it took 2 weeks to get to him.  He wasn't even sick anymore when he finally got it.
Yes, this occurs typically for home deliveries.  UPS gets it to the local area and then hands it over to the post office so it can go out with your mail.  Posted by jcbsjr
This.  Plus it depends on how the shipper sent it: red label (overnight), blue label (2nd day), ground or home delivery, etc.

  • I guess I'm lucky because I live in a gigantic apartment building where all deliveries that don't fit in the mailboxes go to the package room and a notice is put on a computer screen in the mailroom.  So when I pick up my mail, I can see if there's a delivery for me.

There are no deliveries allowed directly to the apartments other than food or pharmacy and then the valet calls to let you know.

    Sorry about your UPS, mrs.B!
  • Fedex has something called Fedex SmartPost that they hand it off to USPS once it gets close enough to the destination.  I HATE this shipping method.  It is a total PITA and takes way longer than just straight Fedex or USPS.  I haven't heard of UPS having a similar thing, but maybe they do now.

Thats what I love about our complex.  Its a townhouse community and we all share porches with the next house for the most part, so they won't leave packages.  But we have the option to sign a form when we move in that if we aren't home they will leave our packages in the office for us, then they put a notice on our door or in our mailbox.  I'm thrilled that I don't have to worry about my laptop getting stolen or left sitting out in the cold.

Sounds like they do and it sounds like, from a PP, that it depends on the vendor's selection of ground vs. other options.  This company has been a major PITA as far as getting my stinkin' items, so I'm thinking I'll order it from amazon from now on so I don't have to deal with them directly.

  • BTW, watch out or I will be nibbling on little B's toes ;)

She's so adorable I just want to mush her up!

  • B - there wasn't anything to click on in that email, was there? J just told me about a virus that's going around with a similarly worded email.

  • OK good - J told me about a virus that's been going around with a similar email, but it asks you to click on the invoice.

We do all our shipping FedEx express, except the 2 weeks before Christmas. He's not allowed to do it then. I could go in as a regular customer and do it, but he couldn't. But - they are cheaper than UPS, at least for us.
