Dude. INAPPROPRIATE.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42568865/ns/travel-news/?GT1=43001

So if I have to incur a little bit more of a risk flying so that 6 year olds don't have to be manhandled by a stranger in rubber gloves, I'm COMPLETELY okay with that.

  • Yeah......  I understand how some sick person could possibly use a kid to hide something, but there must be a different way to screen for that besides a pat-down.

And yeah, I'd be pretty pissed if that was my kid.

  • I can't see why they couldn't just re-scan her.  What the hell.  And the video of the 3 year old screaming and crying about being touched?  Poor baby.  The TSA has to find a better way to do this.

  • Methinks a knot glitch is working here.  Nugget's waaaay to smart to fall for that trick.
  • I think the fact that ANYBODY gets patted down is a complete violation of privacy and personal bounds and is just plain fucking undignified. The lengths TSA is willing to go to to "protect" passengers is utterly ridiculous.

  • On the one hand, I think the woman was as gentle and noninvasive as possible (aside from just rescanning her in the first place), although I can see how someone else could easily be more aggressive in the search. At least she could explain to the kid, but what about babies or toddlers who you can guarantee won't understand?

On the other, had it of been me at that age I would have bitten the person, then kicked them for being a stranger touching me, as was my MO. And my mom would have let me.

SIL and newborn were patted down because SIL took an unopened can of baby formula through security. My dad raised a fuss and asked for his grandson, they wouldn't let him have Chris (and I understand that reasoning). His pat down was generic, though, and the agent brought him to my dad, but went all over Lisa - even made her take out her hairclip.

They told her you can take all the formula etc on the plane you want, but they have to be able to SEE through the container.

It was sort of a clusterfuuck all around, but this was the cherry on top.

ETA:  I have been patted down. They told me (a female agent) where they were going to touch, didn't linger, were professional, and it didn't feel invasive. I was also patted down waist up because I had on a large sweatshirt, so the next time, I just took it off (yes, shirt on underneath), and pulled it snug so she could see there was nothing underneath.

  • Dude. Now I'm all pissed off thinking about airport security and airlines in general. The government, or TSA, or whoever the hell mandates all these security procedures are continually a day fucking late and a dollar goddamn short. They didn't catch the hijackers on 9/11. They didn't catch the underwear bomber guy (I feel like an idiot even saying that) and the consumers are the ones who suffer for all this. On top of it, airlines have ZERO incentive to treat their customers with any kind of respect because people have to fly. And when the industry as a whole pisses enough people off and they lose business for it, oh well, the government will just bail them out anyway.

  • I saw this on the news last night, but they didn't give the full story. When I saw it then I was like "Why didn't they just have the girl go through the scanners?" and thought it was kind of redic they were complaining about something they chose (like how you can choose the pat down over the scanners).

The news didn't say that the girl had already been scanned.  I don't think it was right, but still wonder why they were video recording.
  • That poor little baby girl towards the end.  They couldn't at least give her her teddy bear while they checked her?  What the hell.

  • Long ago when I was a mere infant (before Terrorism made us lose our minds), my older sister got patted down in an airport. She was 2 and was in a stroller and kept one leg pointing straight out, the other bent. My mom has no idea why, but she wouldn't put that leg down. She went through security in the stroller, but then they patted her down to make sure she wasn't hiding some sort of weapon in her pants leg. Ridiculous!

  • Thanks Krupar :) When H was traveling for work all the time, airlines and/or TSA found a way to piss me off every time H had to fly. Every time. Seriously. And I wasn't even the one flying. I'm honestly surprised H's head didn't explode from the stupidity. He has a lower tolerance for it than I do.

OH FOR THE LOVE.  It's nice to know we're protected from all the super-dangerous 6 year olds out there, but apparently they can't manage to find FOOT LONG RAZOR BLADES during their other searches.

  • I'm not shocked by the razor blade thing in the slightest. If someone could point me to one major catastrophe that has been averted since they imposed the crazy security restrictions, I'll eat my words. And maybe it's just a case of "you only hear about the bad stuff" but I'm guessing all this scanning and groping will all be for naught when the next terrible thing happens on an airplane.

  • I don't like the TSA patdowns at all, but I have to say the patdown I got in the airport in Paris was way, way, way worse. She actually grabbed onto my boobages at one point.

That has nothing to do with airline security.  It's because you have such awesome boobage.  She couldn't help it.
