Poll: Stuff for OOT bags

I wanted to buy some locally handmade soap and lotion for the OOT bags.  It is awesome stuff.  However - she wants an asinine amount for it, and I just can't afford it.  So. . . I made my own soap last night.  Two different colors, and I want your opinions on which is better.

There will be a tag that says "Handmade Honey Almond Soap" on one side and has a little blurb about horseshoes being lucky on the other.  And maybe another piece of ribbon to dress it up a bit.

Re: Poll: Stuff for OOT bags

  • Hobby Lobby, JoAnn, Michaels, and Walmart all have the supplies.  I used white opaque glycerin cubes, and the colors and scents are in the same section.  They have molds too.

We're getting married in Kentucky.  I grew up riding horses, and FI now LOVES going to the races.  He proposed at Churchill Downs (home of the Kentucky Derby) and we have two horses.  Also, we're taking anybody who wants to go to the races on Friday before the wedding.

My molds are actually chocolate molds.  I wouldn't use soap molds for chocolate, but chocolate molds for soap are fine - they're designed to withstand higher heat.  They're just a tad stiffer to get the soap out of.  I found them on the web for about $1 each.  The bags are from Nashville Wraps.

Quick googling gave me these references (although there are many others):
    http://www.soapcrafters.com/
    http://www.brambleberry.com/
And, I think there's a tutorial on Wedding Bee somewhere too.  I had actually done it in college years ago.

I *might* try to do lotion too.  Maybe.

For scent, you want to put in about 1 or 2 drops per ounce of soap, max.  And label the scent for your guests so that if they have an allergy, they can avoid it.  For color - go slow.

  • I agree that yellow is more "soap colored" but I like both. I'd mix them up and use one in one bag, one in another.

  • Love those!  I would go with yellow, too, since they are more soap-colored and gender neutral.

BTW Squirrly, what else are you putting in your OOT bags?  And are you doing the giant KFC bucket thing that every KY knottie does?

  • My vote is use both.  Those are awesome, BTW.
  • No KFC bucket for me.  It's a cute idea, in theory, but really impractical, I think.  There's a KFC walking distance from the hotel if they really want a bucket.   :)  I ordered black canvas totes for about $0.80 each.  Link to the site in my bio.

I'm putting in water bottles, Ale-8-One, Tylenol, some touristy maps and brochures (the bourbon trail will send you however many you want), some bourbon nips (Liquor Barn had Evan Williams Honey Bourbon 12/$5.99!), bourbon balls, Blue Mondays, this soap & maybe lotion, Kenny's Cajun microwave popcorn, and some regular snack stuff from Sams that I'm going to repackage down smaller.  I'd love to do Beer Cheese, but that requires refrigeration.  I've got a whole page on the OOT bags in my bio, but if I've missed anything obvious - please remind me.

[QUOTE]Does one color go with your wedding colors better?  But otherwise, I love them both but would vote for yellow because it's more "guy friendly."

    My thoughts exactly!
  • Squirrly, I haven't started on mine, but I know I will do Blue Mondays, bourbon balls, Ale-8, and maybe little bottles of bourbon.  I'll probably just cruise by Liquor Barn at some point and grab a bunch of the local stuff.

I was thinking of getting 2010 Derby glasses, since right after Derby they're only $2, but I don't know if traveling guests would care enough about them to want to pack one so it wouldn't break. Also, I doubt anyone would want just one year's Derby glass.  If I do those, it would be more for aesthetic presentation.

  • I thought about the Derby glasses, but we're expecting about 40 hotel rooms, so that adds up quickly.  (Makers & Woodford run around $3/ea, btw.)  Plus, our guests will mostly be flying home, and I'm worried the glass will break.  If I can find something flat (poster, notecard, etc.) I might get those.
