Caterer AND own food?

We are having our reception at my parents house....hiring a caterer but would like to supplement with a few things ourselves. Can we do that? Is that in poor taste to the catering company??

Re: Caterer AND own food?

  • You'd have to ask the caterer whether you can do that.

What types of things are you planning to supplement with?

  • That is something you need to ask your caterer. Sometimes they have it in their contracts that they provide ALL the food, no outside food or drink allowed. It can be for liability reasons or quality reasons.

Have you hired your caterer yet? If not, make this one of the questions you ask when you are interviewing them. It's always best to know up-front exactly what you are getting and have everything written down in the contract when you sign it.

  • I can see where this might be a tough sell.  A caterer prepares food under strict food safety guidelines in a licensed kitchen.  Allowing home-cooked food to be in the mix puts the caterer on the line for any food born illness, etc.

  • I know you haven't said why you want to do this, but if it is to incorporate some family recipes, could you just give the recipe to the caterer?

  • Since you are having the reception at your parent's home I can't see why that would be a problem.  It's not like they can tell the owners of the property they can't grab food from their own kitchen KWIW?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
