Shower Gifts

I just had my wedding shower, and was wondering if the same rule applies to these gifts that applies to wedding gifts.  Can we use them or should we keep them in the boxes until after the wedding?  Just curious...I also recieved a few checks as shower presents?  Can I deposit these and just not spend the money?  Or do I have to wait? I know I get annoyed when I write a check to someone and they wait forever to cash it, so I dont want to annoy people!  But I also want to follow the rules ....

  • Not using the gifts/money before the wedding ensures that if the wedding is called off you can return the gifts/money to the giver in the same condition they were received.

Send thank you notes for your gifts and the checks now, wait a couple days and deposit the checks.
  • i would definitly cash the checks and use the gifts, they are shower gifts and the shower is over. send thank you's right away.

  • You can open and use whatever you want. Just make sure you keep a list of who gave what, and be prepared for worst case scenario. If you call off the wedding you need to return the gift to the giver, and then means buying a brand new one if you opened and used something. Same thing with checks. Cash them now, but keep a list of who gave what so you can pay them back if necessary.
