Moving furniture

There is a bed set that has been given to us.  It is really nice and works out because we need a queen bed as mine is just a full.  There are complications.

a) It needs to travel about 500 miles  to get to our apartment so we'd need a moving truck or something.
b) It is too big.  There is a queen bed with posters, 2 beside tables, a long vanity dresser, and a stacked chest dresser.  We'd need to either store part of it at my parents house or get a storage unit.

If we want to, we could politely decline it or potentially have it used by my cousin (who currently has it) for another year and a half until I finish grad school.  We would between now and then purchase a queen and maybe have the set or part of the set as a guest bed set.

Re: Moving furniture

  • That sounds like a sweet bedroom setup. I'll "hang onto it" for you. ;)

  • The actual question bit is, what do you think I should do about this whole situation?

  • Hm, one of my concerns would be having other people use the bed set before me, especially if it was brand new. How do you feel about that? Also, how probable is it that your parents could store part of the set (like the posters)? If it were me, I'd probably try to use part of it and store the rest, or decline and get something later when I have more room. This is a really nice gift though!

  • It was my crazy aunt's who moved into a smaller house.  She then gave it to me but my 38 year old  cousin has used it for about 2 years because she had moved from DC and just this past month purchased a house.  I know they've taken good care of it so that isn't a worry.

  • i'd let the cousin keep using it as long as you know you can get it when you need it.

  • Are you moving closer to your cousin when you're done with school?  If so, let them hold onto it for the time-being, because it would not be fun to move it 500 miles twice.
  • Moving it 500 miles is a little extreme, IMO. I would probably just let your cousin hold onto it, and if/when the offer is remade or still existing at a time that suits you so that you can fit the whole thing into your house, you can take it.
  • We probably aren't moving any closer after I finish grad school.

  • Do you know that they've taken good care of it because you've seen it? I remember when you mentioned this a while ago and I think that your best bet is probably to just let it go. We recently moved a 3-bedroom house worth of furniture 400+ miles, and then had to pay for storage ($75/month) and it just is a lot of wasted money IMO.

  • Yes.  I've been in my cousin's house in the last two weeks.  I haven't done inspection or anything, but in her head it is mine.  They are "borrowing" it.  God my family is full of weirdos.

heehee. So long as it doesn't cost you more in the long-run than it would for new furniture, I'd store it. And we used a Uhaul and it was about $300 for the one-way trip... plus FI's friends were free labor so it was an easy move for us :)

  • If it is stored by being their guest set, that's free and I can move it later.
