When is it appropriate to send these out?  We are getting married June 2011 and thought about sending them out around Christmas.  Is this too late, too early??

6 - 8 months.  But remember - anybody you send one to MUST BE INVITED so be positive about your guest list.

In your case I would either send them out in early November or after January 1st so as to avoid the shuffle of Christmas cards.  If you send them out during Christmas card season there is a chance that it will get tossed aside.

I agree with squirrly, though.  Make sure you have your guest list finalized before you send any STDs out.

I am having a June wedding as well, but my wedding is a Friday wedding, so I will be sending mine out earlier than Christmas... I'm talking Late September/Early October territory, the reason being is I will have a lot of OOT guests and want them to be able to have the maximum time needed for travel arrangements. I think before Christmas might be the best bet if you have OOT guests. Just so they can plan vacation time if needed.

Mine is also June next year and the STDs are going to be in the mail this week. Our location is a destination for just about everyone invited and the room rates are very expensive. We wanted to give people plenty of time to plan for travel and accommodations. I don't think it's too early as long as you are sure that you want to invite them 100%.

Mine is at the end of July 2011 and we're sending ours out in a couple weeks. We didn't want them getting mixed up with the holiday cards and we have a lot of OOT guests and we wanted them to be able to get hotel rooms if they needed them since we're getting married at one of the most popular shoreline resorts in CT.
