Are there any spots that are special to you and your FI?  Are you guys beach people, city people, nature people?

Since FI lives in Manhattan (and we both work there), we took ours in Central Park and are finishing them this weekend at Lincoln Center.  Both places that we go all the time, so they're very "us" spots.

We took pictures at Pier A park in Hoboken. We got pictues with the NYC skyline as well as some "nature" shots of us in the grass and under trees.
I would say, without knowing you, Hoboken and/or Weehaken both have beautiful locations that do not require a permit.

We did both Liberty State Park and Waterside Catering - both were good but I liked my evening into night pictures at Waterside ALOT better than the day time photos in LSP because of shadows an squinty eyes in the daytime.
Here are some examples of mine:

    Good luck in your search!

Deep cut Gardens in Middletown, great setting.  I would work with your photographer on a location, they can certainly suggest a few they have been to.

Asbury Park makes for some AMAZING shots. 2 of my friends did theres there. We originally wanted ours there but when we went in October they were doing their Halloween "Zombie Walk"... There were 4,000 Zombies throughout the main boardwalk/convention area.. My photog turns to me and says, I'm good, but I'm not that good. So were ended up in Spring Lake around the little stone church area.  They still came out great but the vibrant colors and details in Asbury are so fun!

we had ours at the NJ botanical gardens in Ridgewood- really pretty shots if your into nature/flower pics

We didn't do an e-shoot, but if we did, I would seek out garden settings.  Either the NJ Botanical Gardens, the Willowood Arboretum, or the Frelinghusen Arboretum.  I remember seeing someone else's pictures posted here over the winter done at the Madison Campus of FDU which I thought were really beautiful.
