Marriage liscence question

FI and I are disagreeing when I need to go for my marriage liscence. I thought that I have to apply for the liscence 72 hours before the wedding. After we get married the minister has 30 to file it before it expires.FI thinks I have 30 days before the wedding to apply for the liscence. FI thinks it takes 72 hours to get it and we can pick it up anytime before the wedding. Please clear this up for us.

You're FI is sort of right.  You have to go before the wedding (we went three weeks earlier) and submitted our application.  3 days later the license was ready.  Once we picked it up, it was valid for 30 days.

I would go two weeks before.........it takes a few days to prepare....if info is wrong or it's not ready, you can't get married.

Yup, your Fi is correct.  You have 30 days before to apply, we did on the earlier side of our window.  And our license was ready to be picked up 3 business days after our wedding.

to piggy back on this - where do you apply?  town where the bride resides or the town you are getting married in?

Where to apply: If the bride lives in NJ, the town the bride lives in.  If the bride lives out of state, the town the groom lives in. If both are out of state, the town you are getting married in.

piggy backing too:  This may be a stupid question, but do we both have to actually go to the town hall and file for the license, can just one of us go, can my mom do it for us?  Also,  do we have to pick it up or can someone else pick it up for us?

You both need to be there and we had to bring a witness.  Only one of you needs to pick it up though.

You and your FI both have to go and bring a witness with you to apply for the license.  When the license is ready 3 days later, either you, your FI or your witness can pick it up.

PP's are correct, you both need to go with a witness, and just one of you has to pick it up (usually ready a few days after you apply).  This stuff does get tricky when you don't live near where you are getting married.

Yes it does get tricky living out of state...lol...exactly why I asked those questions! I guess we'll definitely be planning a trip to NJ in the weeks before the wedding (if we already weren't going to have to).

Piggybacking again--one witness or one witness for each of us?

make sure to call and ask the town for their recommendations -- Wayne told me they require 2 weeks to prepare it (the girl is not real pleasant either -- told me NO evening appointments then I get there and she asks if I'm her 6:00 coming early -- I always jumped over the counter to strangle her since I had to leave work early to be there by 3:30 (her supposed last appt). Also when I got there she typed it up WRONG and I had to wait for them to re-do the entire thing!!!!
