Do I have to put the mans name first?????

What if its my friend that's a female that coming & I barely know her significant other - do I still have to put him first on the place cards?I feel like its an insult to my friend if I do not put her first - what do you think?

I would put my friend first. I'm not sure if that's proper.

If they're unmarried, it's Miss Betty Jones and Mr. John Smith. Woman goes first in that case. If they're married, it's "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith"; or if you're not using titles, "Betty and John Smith" because you don't separate the man's first name from his last name. If they're married but she uses her maiden name, you can use Ms. Betty Jones and Mr. John Smith.

ditto mbcdefg.  there is no "insult" in etiquette unless you don't follow it.  if they are married, his name is first, unless she holds a higher degree.  if they aren't married, you can bend these rules as stated.
