Do you Need a DJ and a MC?

I've been looking into some of the recommendations here on DJs and most of the packages they quote me for provide both a DJ and a MC.  When I ask they tell me there are packages available with just a DJ.What are the benefits of having both?  All the weddings I have ever been too only have one DJ doing both the DJ/MC roles and I'm not quite sure if there is a reason to have two people. (I should note that we do not want a DJ/MC/combo that has someone talking over the music a lot but we are having a big reception). Thanks in advance for your responses!

there was no need to have a MC at my wedding.  the DJ made the announcements, which was all i needed him to do.  if you need an entertainer, then you'd want a MC.

We absolutely did not want a separate MC because we didn't want someone who would be talking a lot.  The benefit of having both is that you have someone who is spending a good amount on the mic trying to get the crowd going.  It doesn't sound like that's what you want.Since it seems like you want someone more unobtrusive, I would recommend that you look at Aria Melody and A Starry Night (which is who we used).  They both only make announcements when necessary.  A few of our friends who have booked DJs from big DJ/MC companies and who have asked those DJs to keep their mouths shut during the festivities have ended up with loudmouths anyway (who maybe were exercising restraint, but then I wouldn't want to see them on a normal night!).  I would make sure that you're comfortable that you and your DJ have a similar philosophy.

I'm also not a fan of he "emcee as a personality." I just want good music. We looked at (and liked) A Starry Night, but went with DJ Gaza. He's also of the "I will do as little talking as possible" school of thought, which is just what we wanted.

We just had a DJ and he made all the announcements.  We didn't want someone talking the whole night.

Not a huge fan of MCs either b/c of their voices (they usually sound corny to me).  But it didn't cost extra to have the MC.  If we removed it from the package, it didn't make the price go down.  So chose to stick with it.

I am going with just a DJ. I want to hear music. Not someone talking all night. Just introduce us and play the music.
