Fajita Station WWYD

So fi and I wanted something a little different for us at the ch so we decided in a fajita station for a lot of food preference reasons of our guests, my mom, being nice and telling people at work told them and everyone mom included thinks its a messy bad idea. My outlook is if adults can't keep the food in their mouth, on plate & and napkins they are poor excuses of humans, she thinks I'm being unrealistic. WDYT?

MMM fajitas.  But I agree that can get really messy...what are your other choices?

We were going to do a fajita station but opted for a hibachi station instead partly bc it seemed easier/less messy. However, if we really loved fajitas more than habachi it wouldn't have been a huge factor. If you think about all the food at a CH, most of it isn'teasy to eat in a CH setting.

the fajitas do sound good, but that is exactly why we didnt get them. Thought it would be messy, or difficult, to eat while holding your plate, a drink, and socializing.

Beth-not many more "different options" the only other option is taste of takeout, which only has meat or shrimp, no "veggie" option and FI's SIL and niece have gluten allergies (no noodles), we figured the fajita station would be good because even if the tortilla's were flour, they could just eat the meat, the stupid idiotic "I don't eat anything with face" people could go enjoy the crudite (sp) (can you tell I'm just done!)I am now picturing a bunch of messing old women walking around my wedding looking like they just got into a fight with a taco maker.Chelsea, would you be normally human and eat gently if you had them?

Is it a make your own fajita station? If so then I think that logistically it's not ideal but I love fajitas and I am an adult and I'd make it work. I think if they are already pre-made and people can just take them and go I don't see any problem at all.

Hmm yeah go for fajitas.  If people think it will be to messy to eat they can go get something else.
  • edited December 2011
Oh Kathy *sigh* what do you suggest, we are doing carving, smashed potato bar and (enter something different) LOL Seabass, it is a chef attended one, so they do it however you want it.

I probably wouldn't eat it unless I definitely had a seat at a table for CH, even then wouldn't risk it...fajitas have spill factor and are just messy no matter what --thats part of the fun of eating them, just not in formalwear...

I say Dan and you are the ones whose wedding it is, so if you want the fajitas, get them. i got carving, smashed potato, and takeout (shrimp lo mein and beef w/broccoli)We made sure to choose meat free choices for the chafing dishes to accomodate the vegetarians and pasta lovers.

Honestly if a chef is making it then I think it's totally fine. I feel like the really messy part is actually making it. If it's rolled right & tight it shouldn't leak. Maybe ask if they can use the really small tortillas so they are more bite size.

I was going to do that Kathy, but with my few people with actual health risks to eating anything with gluten, we had to split it up between fishes/pastas and meats (I honestly care more about them because its health then the others as mean as that sounds). Well, we have a week to decide, I guess I'm just now freaked out, everytime someone mentions something to me I get weird visions in my head!

I'm having my reception at the crystal ballroom too, and we're doing the fajita station. We thought it was different, so we chose that along with the pasta station and gourmet skewer foutain.

Cheryl - does that include anything thickened with flour?  If so, the fajita "sauce" could be thickened with cornstarch or flour.

FI and I decided against the fajita station at the Crystal Ballroom. But i say go for what you and your FI want, it is your wedding. There is so much to choose from during the CH that I dont think it will make a big difference.

Beth, I actually just emailed the venue, and asked them to talk to the chef about what was gluten free, since this disease is so common now, a lot of places know ahead of time and since it can make my FSIL and my Fniece very sick I think I need to find out that first.  My outlook is have enough stuff for them to eat where I can split it up.  I have 2 vegans attending and they eat NOTHING but veggies and pasta but FI is has had just about enough with them, and we decided to focus on the other two. I though never thought about a thickened sauce, which is a REALLY good question and great that I emailed the venue! :)  It was hard enough telling FI that he couldn't choose only what he liked LOL :) Oh and FB me beth I need your help!

That's a great idea and very sweet of you to think of them.  Maybe the venue will have a specific they can do instead. On it now...

I wouldn't think twice about it, but since you're asking, I did eat a fajita once at a wedding CH and I'll be honest, it was a bit too much.  I guess it was just really big and I felt like it filled me up like a whole meal, when a CH is supposed to be me more about picking at different foods. It also took me two hands to cut in and eat it.

I personally wouldn't eat it at the cocktail hour. I'm clumsy so it'd be too messy for me ... and like Tiff said, that's a LOT of food and it'd fill be up right away. But it's not like you're shoving it down people's throats, and you have other options available. So if you want it, get it. Don't overthink it too much.

I'm an I don't eat anything with a face person.  But I'm not stupid...    ;)Perhaps a quesadilla station?  They're already put together and cut up...might be less messy.   I agree with lots of pp's here.  If someone can't handle the difficulty level of it all, I'm sure there will be many other options.  But think about the quesadilla thing.

I wanted to do the fajita station as well.  I never even thought about this.  But i would also thing that with a carving station you would need to put your plate down somewhere to eat because you would need to cut the meat and with the takeout you couldnt hold your drink and the box and eat.  I dont eat meat so I have no idea but I think people would just go to a table.  I liked the fajitas because I am vegetarian.  I also thought of asking them to do a veggie lo mein instead of the shrimp one.  There are plenty of veggie cocktail options on the list without the stations but since its my wedding I wanted the most of everything.

We went to a wedding w/ a fajita station and I wouldn't even try them once I saw one person - a woman in a pastel dress - spill it all over herself b/c someone knocked into her. It's not necessarily that they can't "keep it in their mouth", cocktail hour rooms have a lot of people milling around not paying attention.

I am all for a fajita station. Its different...second if people cant eat over their plate during cocktail hour, especially if a chef is wrapping it tight for them, well whatever...Im doing it...if people are afraid of the mess then they wont eat it. And yes im also doing the mashed potato bar!
