Poll: Short Marriage?

Inspired about Renee's post about people who got divorced like 3 weeks after the wedding. What length of time do you consider to be a short marriage? 6 months, a year, 5 years?

Under 3 years I'd say. Less than a year is one that gets talked about usually I find.

I'd have to say less than a year.  I think then you aren't really even giving it a shot.

I'm not sure about an exact time limit, maybe less than 3 years? I think it has a bit to do with whether you have kids or not as well.  I know a lot of people who were married in their early/mid 20s and divorced before they had kids.

I feel like it's relative, but I would consider any marriage that is shorter than the length of time the couple dated before they got married, to be a short marriage.

it really depends. To Steph's point, if I were to get divorced in 3 years, that would be about the amount of time we were together before getting engaged...but in total, it'd mean an 13 year relationship. So in that case, still considered short? My cousin was with her x for 11 years before they got married. The marriage itself lasted less than a year.

I don't know what the hell I was typing above. We were together almost 10 years before we got married (10 years yesterday actually!).

Depends on the circumstances, too...I can't really blame one party too much if one person cheated or something. But if it's for no "acute" reason, I'd think under a year wasn't really giving it a shot. But I've heard of people who said their partner completely changed after marriage. One woman I worked with said her first husband had a completely different personality once he thought she was stuck--scary! She's been married to her second husband for like 20+ years. I'd rather the person get out and be happy than stay with someone like that.

if less than a year, it shouldn't even count, and the couple should be forced to send all gifts back and give me back those 5 hours i wasted at their wedding.
