Cake pricing?

Hi Ladies!

So if you read my previous post, I am about to select my cake! We're only have 120 people, so it'll probably be a 3 layer cake; and the design I like is very simple- all white with a little bit of piping, all buttercream- so basically, design cost will be low.

How much did you pay/are you paying per person? I've been hearing the 4.50 to 5.50 range, which sounds high to me! I will pay for good cake of course, but just wondering if I'm paying too much

My cake was $5.25 per slice.  I have a cake based on 120 guests, simple white buttercream, minimal design.  We did 4 layers so that we could just keep the top layer.

Doing the cake really hurt my feelings...I couldn't believe how much a basic cake actually was going to cost.  But I just sucked it up and moved on because any way that you shake it its a pretty hefty expense. 

Testing is the really fun part too

And yeah, I suspect we'll have to go 4 layers, although my parents may suprise FI with his grooms cake at the reception (with Georgia Tech colors and cake topper, his undergraduate alma mater!), in which case we'll do 3 layers of the real cake, save the top, and serve the groom's cake as well.

It was an idea from our baker at edible art!

That seems about average. I believe ours was $4.50 per slice, but it depends on the flavor you get. We got ours from Sweet Memories Bakery in Apex.  They are amazing!! 

You should definitely do a tasting there before you book.  I think it's way better than most of the other options in Raleigh.  Ps, the bridal shows at the Fairgrounds are a great way to taste a bunch of bakeries and cake flavors at one time.  I found that this was the best way to identify the best bakery.

I am using Callies Confections out of Asheville...I was super pleased with her work and she has been great to work with.  If I'm going to have to spend that kind of money I want to feel good doing it...

I think ours was $4.00 pp, for a four tier cake, minimal decorations (although decorations didn't cost extras). And it was super yummy!

Have u had edible arts cakes? I think they are way overpriced for their cakes, and it hasn't been very good. Thats just my experience with them.

I am using Daphne's bakery and it is $3 per slice.  They do great work and their cake tastes amazing!!

Pinky: yes, we've done Edible Art at birthdays and celebrations for years! Some people aren't into the pound cake, which is all of their standard cakes- I didn't try any of the other flavors though. Edible Art is sort of my fail safe, if I can't find another bakery.

Ours is a little over $3.00 a person, but that is in the Triad, not Charlotte or Raleigh so that might be part of the difference.  We are doing a three tier cake  with a "kitchen" cake, which will basically be a sheet cake in the back that will be the same flavor and icing, but won't be decorated.  It will get cut and no one will know it wasn't from the fancier cake.  Also, if we don't go through the whole three tier cake, the kitchen cake won't get cut into, so the leftovers will stay a bit fresher.

 Saved about $50.00 total doing that, I think.

Hi Sarah.  We are using Cake Lady Jill for our wedding.  She is super nice and her cakes are delish.  I think that she charges $4.25 or $4.50 a slice which I found was right in the middle range of other bakers.  We are hoping for around 125 guests.  If I remember correctly, she will give us a complimentary mini-cake for our first anniversary cake (so we don't have to save the top layer on the wedding day).  There is also no charge for set-up and delivery in the Charlotte area (some bakers we met with charged for this).   Hope this helps!

We kind of went along the same path as Beth.  We are having a small 2 tier cake the is going to be all decorated up. It'll serve about 40 people.  Then we'll have 2 sheet cakes in the back that will be cut up and brought out after we cut our cake.  We ended up getting the 2 tier cakes with to sheet cakes that have 50 slices each for $200.  Our baker Is Kathy Canby out in Jacksonville, NC.  She is nothing but amazing!  She doesn't charge the same amount for a basic sheet cake as she would for a decorated wedding cake.

I am using Sweet Memories too (and OMG I love their cake... so yummy.) I think ours is 5.50 per slice because of the fondant but I'm not sure. I do know that the cake design I had my heart set on is actually way more than I wanted to spend because of the "design fee" which makes the price go up. I went ahead and signed the contract for that cake because my mom really liked the expensive-design (and the cake is her contribution) but I'm still having sticker shock about it and may change my mind.

If you want an inexpensive cake then try Cakes by Victoria (Monroe/Mint Hill area). 

Everyone has been recommending to me Cake Lady Jill and Elizabethan Delights.

We used Cinda at Cinda's Creative Cakes. We paid $4.05 a serving & it's not additional any kind of decorations. I used to work at Edible Art so I definitley considered their cake (the lemon pound cake is my favorite) but they are overpriced IMO & the owner isn't always the best person to deal with. Cinda's cakes are just as delicious and are lighter, she also has many more flavor options (that was important to me). She's as sweet as she can be and she's really good at what she does. I would drefinitely recommend her. You get a free 6" anniversary cake so you'll be able to serve your top tier.

Krystal- lemon was my fave too! I've only ever had the almond, I think, and let's face it, that's a pretty standard flavor You're definitely right about the cake being heavy since it's pound cake, it's def something I was not 100% with for my wedding, even though I do love the cake!

Addie- I'm glad to hear all that about Cake Lady Jill! A girlfriend of mine just used her, so I am very excited to meet her next week. FI is coming too, and he's not a dessert person, so I'm hoping we can find a flavor/filling that we both like!

Ours is also in the $3-4 range and in the triad.  I'm pretty sure we're using the same baker as Beth.  We're not getting a kitchen cake and each layer will be a different flavor.

Beth.  My caterer says that what that baker considers a slice is a bit larger than what a slice actually turns out to be.  The baker also showed me how in her catalogs where she orders the pans that the slice count (for lack of anything better to call it) is higher than what she calculates it to be.  So that may be something else to keep in mind.

Not sure where you are located but I used Dewey's Bakery in Winston-Salem.  Round cakes are cheaper than square.  Their white and devil's food cake are $3.00 per slice and special flavors: carrot, pumpkin spice, red velvet and pink lemonade are $3.50 per slice.  I had a 4 tier with cream cheese icing and some very simple dots and scroll work.

They have been in business for a long time and the cake was wonderful...I think they bake it fresh b/c it is really moist.  Also you don't have to save the top tier b/c they send you a coupon for a free one on your 1 year.
