Hey, quick question. I loved your hawaii pics, what lens do you use?I just upgraded to the 50d and I'm looking to add some lenses. (I have the 28-135mm IS & the 18-55mm IS).
It takes Shakespeare, a genius, to come up with "He dies." And yet every time I read those two words, I find myself overwhelmed with dysphoria. And I know it's only natural to be sad, but not because of the words "He dies." but because of the life we saw prior to the words

I really liked the 28-135mm, but it wasn't wide enough to be a useful walkaround lens. Most of the pictures were taken with a 24-105L F4. The 24mm vs 28mm was a big difference and not much sacrifice on the long end. It has a 4 stop (newer) IS system...the waterfall pictures I took with it were handheld up to 1/2 - 1/3 second shutter speed with no issues.A good alternative to the 24-105 would be the 17-55. It's better than the 18-55 because it's an F2.8, great in low light and great for portraits where you want an out of focus backgroundI rented a 10-22mm ultra wide angle and most of the landscapes were taken with it. This is a must have for vacation / landscapes. The surfing shots I took with a 55-250mm zoom. It's an inexpensive zoom but has pretty decent image quality and sharpness. One day I will get a 100-400L, but probably not for a while. The shallow depth of field shots were all taken with a 50mm prime, F1.8. It only costs 80 bucks and it's the sharpest lens in my bag. Great value. All of the outdoor shots were taken with a circular polarizing filter. Before adding any lens's to your bag, think out your long term plan. Do you take more pictures of landscapes or people? also, if you plan to go full frame in the future, you may not want to invest in EF-s lens's (that won't fit).

I agree about the 28-135 not being wide enough, but I overall can't complain about the lens. How did I know you were going to say you had the 25-105? LOL, I love that lens but I don't love the price. Maybe after the new year when I get my bonus. The 55-250 was definitely on my list, and another photographer friend recommended the 50mm 1.8 to me a while ago. Its so inexpensive I honestly don't know why i haven't bought it yet.And I'm not planning on ever going full frame so thats why i'm looking to add lenses. Thanks for the recs!

Depending on what you like to shoot...the 55-250 will have limited use. I'd get the 50mm for now, and play with it. It's fun taking depth of field shots and it's a great portrait lens. What you have will cover a good "walk around range"...you may just have to change lens's more often than you would like.I actually got a steal on the 24-105. This place in the city was breaking 5D kits to sell the body only and selling the lens's open box (new) for 799.This was taken at f1.8...focus point was taken 10th from the left. The advantage of your camera (50D) is that you can microcalibrate the autofocus for each lens to be exact (I had to send mine to canon).

$799? OMG, that definitely is a steal.I'm definitely starting out with the 50mm and we'll see from there. I knew about micro adjustment on the 50d, I just need to figure this thing out.
