Does the photographer have to be Indian?

Our culture is little too complicated :)

The reason I ask is bc my photographer was working on a 3day Indian wedding when I went in to see him a couple weeks ago. He's Italian though!

Rosie - Are you using John Arcara also??? Raksha - You can try John, we're using him. He posted pics on his facebook page of a big Indian wedding he did recently... I know his wife is Indian - he showed us pictures from their ceremony.... And his work is awesome! You can try this link to see his pics. Or just look for his fan page on FB http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/album.php?page=1&aid=113940&id=38703276393

I don't know if this photographer is Indian or not but one of the sample weddings on his website is from an Indian wedding. I've never worked with this photographer and actually never got to meet with him, I just remembered that I had seen pics of an Indian wedding on the site. www.lifemosaicstudios.com

i understand , i just want to be safe than sorry. I would really like to get someone Indian who is NOT at Traditional and at the same time it should be artistic too. I am asking for too much ?

If I were you, rather than limiting yourself to just Indian photographers, I would focus on finding a photographer that fits your style and has plenty of experience photographing Indian weddings. The chances are that they will probably end up being Indian but if you do it this way, you're not excluding good candidates just because they're not Indian.

there are many, many photographers who could likely shoot an indian wedding much better than just limiting yourself to an indian person.  strange.  i have lots of recommendations of people who do fabulous work in all cultures if you change your tune.

I second John Arcara. His work is great. I'm using him. He is married to an Indian woman and from the photos it looks like they had an Indian ceremony as well as an American one. I've also seen photos from some other family weddings he's shot. I think that he would be good for to at least talk to. Also his wife is often his second shooter. They worked together full time in the beginning but she has started to limit when she works because they have two little girls now. He's very photo journalistic so his work is not super traditional.

An Indian wedding I attended used Frank Manning. If you go to his website and click on gallery 1, you can see some of her pics. There were 2 services and he was there for both. http://frankdomywedding.com/

Agree with Allie--- I wouldn't limit yourself to Indian photographers.I've seen several gorgeous weddings shot by Karen Wise, for example... www.karenwise.com (look at the wedding of Priti and Jaouad that was shot in India, and these blog entries: http://blog.karenwise.com/karen-wise-photo-blog/indian-weddings/)I understand that there are big differences between Indian weddings and your typical NJ weddings, and you want to pick a photographer who will understand that-- but there are many, many, many talented photographers who would have no problem doing a great job with your day.

I just responded to your post on the SA board and I agree with what the pps said.  Don't limit yourself.  Particularly because many of the SA photographers in NJ are incredibly shady and my friends have had horrible experiences with many Indian photographers in the area.

Many photographers these days have done Indian weddings.  A lot will even have a section for it on their website.  I must have looked at 100 websites & interviewed several before deciding.  In the end, the non-Indian ones were far more stylish, professional, and worth the price.  I have seen several Indian photographers at work and think it is ridiculuous what they charge for what you get.  In fact, I suggest you don't even bother with the Indian photographers if you are picky about style.

I highly recommend Charmi Pena.  She's Indian and totaly not traditional in the sense of "oh can you do that again and this time look at the camera."  Her website is www.charmipena.com. Her work is breathtaking!
