NWR: Question of Morality

This woman was mistakingly given a $29,000 tip when she should have gotten $29.00. She said she thought it was her lucky day and spend the money right away. WWYD?<a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090916/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_notre_dame_big_tip"</a>

I once returned $1.00 too much that was given to me. I am not super moral but just always fearful I will get caught doing something wrong. Guilt - the by product of coming from a traditional Italian up-bringing

Give it back. I'd be sick to my stomach to keep it.

Sorry but what an idiot. CLEARLY that was an error... she shouldn't have spent the money. Anyone with a brain would realize that there's no way in hell you'd get a $29,000 tip.

you would have to give it back, nothing good could come with what you would do with that money

if she TRULY thought that it was really supposed to be her tip...it is more a question of stupidity rather than morality.

I purchased 2 exact bathing suit cover-ups from a store in the mall along with some other things and the sales woman didn't ring me up for one of them. When I got home I felt so guity that I called and had them charge my card. My friend told me I was a moron but I could never wear it and feel good about it. I don't know if it was my moral gene in action or straight up fear that karma was going to get back at me.

I have to be honest...maybe I'm a bad person, but if it was a "small" mistake, I'm not sure I'd tell them. Like the PPs bathing suit coverup story. If they didn't ring it up, I probably wouldn't say anything, but $29K, I certainly would.

Definitely not okay, because you're depriving someone-- who you know nothing about and may need the money more than you-- of a LOT of money. And as a lawyer, it isn't legally okay either-- you aren't allowed to exploit an obvious mistake in a contract like that.

I would say something, not necessarily because that's the right thing to do, but more because I know that eventually they will realize their mistake and take it back. A similar thing happened to a girl FI worked with. She switched shifts which was at a lower pay scale then what she had been working. Well pay roll never adjusted her salary so she kept getting paid her old salary. She called, she filled in paper work and it took them 3 months to fix her paycheck. To "fix" their error they deducted a certain amount from her future paychecks until everything balanced out.

A small mistake I wouldn't say anything. 29 k! I might not go out of my way to turn it in, but I'd be terrified of getting caught and having to pay it back, so I'd probably leave it sitting in my account.

It's tantamount to stealing, and I sincerely hope she loses. I'm not saying I've never let a mistake in my favor go, but if it's any more than a certain amount, depending on where it happened, I would say something. People could lose their jobs over being short on the register, that's not worth a few more bucks in my pocket to me.
