Poll: What will you do with your dress?

I am torn between selling my dress, since I know I'll never use it again, and using it to make my daughters christening gown.  I just feel like such a small part goes to the gown, and you waste the rest of the material.What will YOU do with your dress?

It is still sitting in my closet.  We aren't having kids, so no christening outfit.  I may wear it to do the dishes one night.  I'm not really attached to it, but can't imagine someone wanting to buy it.  Donate maybe.

FI will keep for our daughter (hopefully we have one in the future) and FI's nieces and especially her goddaughter to use on their wedding day's (hopefully they get married)

Right now it's hanging up in a closet at my parents house. I don't have the heart to sell it, but I'm not sure if I want to cut it up for a christening gown. I guess we'll see.

Aww Dana, you have to keep your dress now that you know you're having a daugther. Whether you use it for the christening gown or keep for a memory for her is up to you.

I will keep it. My  mom would probably cry if I didnt.  Maybe I will use for my daughters christening gown.  I am going to try and use my moms gown for a veil.. well parts of it.

haha Jen- I did that too! About a month after the wedding, I went over to my parents house and put it on! LOL

The woman who I mentioned below that had it done only used the train. It it still the same dress minus the train and the seamstrses managed to make the dress look like it wasn't even missing. I guess if you had no train/small train that makes a difference. I'm thrilled that my nonna (who made my mom's dress) beaded some extra lace when she made my mom's dress and she is adding it onto a handkerchief for me for my wedding day. That is very special!

how much of the dress is actually used for a christening gown? I can't imagine more than the train, right?

Christening gown. My mom also suggested a basinett skirt. Btw, I saw it post-washing machine and it did come out really good. Who'd have thunk it? :P

Right now I'm thinking that I'll try to sell it, and if there's no takers I'll donate it to Brides Against Breast Cancer. I can't picture a future daughter wanting to wear it, and I'd hate to cut it up if another bride can get some use out of the whole thing. I just don't want to have to store it for no reason. Not sure about the veil. I'd either sell it or hang onto it in case my sister or a friend wants to use it in a few years.

basinett skirt is a cute idea too!  Never heard of that.  But I didn't use a basinett with brandon and I don't plan on it with this baby either. :(My mom won't care either way what I do - I kind of wish she did care so I could make a darn decision.

Im planning on selling but I dont even have it yet so Im not sure. Im using the lace from my  mom's gown to edge my veil so that I will keep in case I have a daughter and for sentimental reasons.   My mom's veil was lost and I have always wanted to wear it. Luckily the lace from her dress is the same and we can re-create it pretty easily.

i'm having a christening dress made from the train of my dress, along with pieces (lace and beading) from my mom's wedding dress. completely my mom's doing, i didn't care either way but i'm glad now that i let her do it.my dress is sitting nicely in its coffin box. i keep saying i might sell it (even though it's now missing the bigass train), as much as i loved my dress i'm definitly not attached to it.

Einat, since there are rules for the design/style of the dress... I'm sure there are rules where the dress ends up after the wedding.

although a great idea I dont think Brad realizes most women want their own wedding dress that they picked out being that most are gonna be 20-30 years old (the dresses)and probably out of style and I dont think all of those girls want to wear the same one..but I could be wrong..lol

I have no idea...my future possible children will wear the same christening gown i wore, so a no good there, i already trashed it, so it will prob just stay in its box after its clean....

no einat, they will want their own style, I think it is overly optomistic to think they will want to wear the exact dress, but maybe take pieces of it for a their veil, or to wrap around their bocquet or as a christening gown, or as a christening headband

I got it cleaned preserved, and it now sits in a box at my parents' house.  If we ever move to a place that is big enough, it would sit in a box in my house.  I would never cut it up.As I said in the post earlier, in retrospect I would have sold it.  But I got caught up in the "OMG you must clean it immediately or it will be ruined forever" hype, and sent it to Madame Paulette to have it cleaned/preserved before I went on my honeymoon (and before I had time to research prices and quality of other services).  I paid so much for cleaning/preserving that it probably wouldn't be worth reselling it because so much of the resale value would be the cleaning cost, and for (in part) the same reason I wouldn't cut it up for a gown.

I want it for my daughter to play dress up in. lol. I always wished my mom had her dress so I could have done that.

I just put it up on ebay the other day and someone already wants to buy it. Now I'm feeling slightly sad but I really don't have any other plans for it!

I don't know....I've thought about this. At one point I thought I'd donate it. Another point I thought I would make a christening gown out of it. Now I'm thinking I will save it in case I have a daughter who may want to wear. I'd like to think it's classic, with an edge...so maybe it won't be too outdated down the road...but I'm sure mother's back in the 80s thought the same thing. haha

oh ok...that makes sense. I was thinking you meant it bothers you cause you think it's weird or something. Ya, I wonder if I'll feel differently after wearing it all night and after the fact.
