Day Care

Do you want to put your kids in day care or do you want to stay home? I would love to have FI stay home while they are infants and todlers and go back to school at night to get a better degree and then go back to work when they are in school full time, but I doubt we can afford it

you are on a roll, man! I'd agree with you up there, I'd like to stay home while they are infants and toddlers then go back to work - but maybe not an office job again.

that would be my ideal situation too, but unfortunately, the damn mega keeps NOT landing on my numbers.

Do I want to stay home? yes.  Can we afford that? no.  So Brandon goes to The Learning Experience 8:30-3:30, and then comes to work for an hour until 5ish. The new baby will come to work with me (in my mom's office) until it is loud enough to be heard by others in the office.  Then it's off to daycare for her too.  probably around 7 months or so.

I would have to say that I agree with you.  I would like to stay home for when they are younger, but as they get older I would like to do something part time.  I do think though that day care can be a good thing too.  I even think that I would pay for them to be in part time even if I was home.

ideally i would like to stay home, but that probably will not be financially possible. i hope to keep my current job, go into the office 3 days a week and the other 2 work from home; have a nanny those days i work from home or day care.

I would want them in day care.  At least for part of the day.  My FI and I had this convo yesterday and he thought I should stay home if we could afford it.  I dont think I would like that.  i think it all changes when the baby comes though.

I work from home right now so I'm very lucky. But I would def want to stay home. Once they are older I think day care is a good idea for socialization (is that the right term? I am used to talking about my dogs and not kids just yet). But I would still want to be home.

I am going to continue to work. Hopefully we will have moved back to jersey when we start having kids so that my family can watch the baby. I'm not in any rush to have kids.

I am the breadwinner of the family, so if one of us were to stay home, it would be DH.  We were supposed to move out of this area into a lower cost of living area, and if that happened, DH probably would have taken a year or so off to watch our future baby, then go back to work.  Since that didn't happen, we will probably both keep to working and do daycare or get lucky with grandparents helping out somewhat.

I must say that I am totally lucky to have a family owned company, and also have my aunt who runs a company in the same building.  Brandon is not deprived of seeing his mommy ever, and I think the 8:30-3:30 is good for him right now at almost 2.  He knows he's coming back to me, but he has time to socialize with other kids. But I DO feel bad for moms that have to leave their newborn babies so early.  It would hurt me so badly to do that.

I will be working from home and bringing the baby with me when I need to come into the office.  I am a partner in the company and thankfully I have this option.

I couldn't be a stay at home. I wish we could send our child to day care a la FMIL, but unless she moves to NJ it would be a hell_of a commute to drop our kid off in MD everyday before work.

Ditto pp.  I would want to stay home when they were infant/toddlers and then work part time while they are in school and have my mom or future MIL watch them the rest of the time.  or maybe do daycare a few days a week.  I think it is good for kids social skills to be in day care, etc.

I would love to stay home while our children are infants and toddlers, but unless we win the lottery, I'll probably only get to stay home a year or 2.

When we decide to have kids, I will stay home with them while they are young and/or until I go nuts. Second option is my mom. No daycare for us.

I hope that we will be financially secure with just my fi working and I can stay home, he is self employed so we have to see when the time comes.

NO DAYCARE!!!  i worked at one when i was younger and if you knew how neglected children are its horrible!  I don't care if we are piss poor because I am not working full time - but My children will never step foot inside a day care center.  I would rather hire a nanny.

At least in our current situation, after maternity leave my husband would be the one to stay home.  If he could work from home -- which could be possible with his job -- we would maybe do that.  Otherwise, we'd probably go for a nanny.Of course, this assumes that we'll have children.  I'm not sure.

ideally i would love to work part time - 9-3 or so 3 or 4 days a week.  if we are not in the financial position to do that then i hope to stay at my current job and work from home 2 days a week.  i don't mind the idea of day care - i think there are a lot of benefits to a child to be with other children.

This is pretty irrational.  ALL daycares are the same? Let's apply that to nannies... haven't you heard about the nannies who have shaken babies to death?  The one who suffocated a baby bc he wouldn't stop crying? How about the one who left two children under 3 to go for a ride with her boyfriend?  What about the ones who sleep with husbands? Or sexually abuse the kids in their care?  I think you should ban all nannies too while you are at it.

I would love to stay home but I doubt we will be able to afford it. One day maybe.Preschool is a must these days for kids. I am a kindergarten teacher and I see it all.

Luckily, my dad is retired and my mom is near retirement, so I wouldn't have to take time off beyond maternity leave.  So they would probably help take care of the baby.  I would love to stay at home for some time, but not sure if we would be able to swing paying mortgage + all of our bills/loans on one salary.

That's a pretty rash blanket statement.  I personally know a friend who own a daycare and know from experience that the children are NOT neglected.  Actually quite the opposite.  Obviously to each his (her) own, I have no problem with people being against sending their child to day care, but to make a statement about ALL daycares is pretty ridiculous IMO.

my son is 22 months and goes to day care two days a week while i go to school. it's a perfect situation for our family. i still get to spend a lot of time at home with him, but he also gets to regularly meet with some of his friends.as for the pp who send that all daycares are awful and children are neglected... that is so not true. i worked at a daycare center a while ago and while i did find that some people don't pay attention to the children, others love them as if they were their own. you really just need to visit (not just once) a bunch of centers and find which one is best for your family. ddelo23- are you happy with the learning experience? my son is going to be switching to one in a few months.

Yes I definitely am happy with them.  I didn't want to put brandon there until he was one though, since they require them to be full time from 0-1.  His teachers are great though, and really do seem to care.  He has fun, and sometimes doesn't even want to come home!!!  He yells at me because he wants to stay with his 2 girlfriends (who I caught him kissing yesterday! on the lips! haha and yes, they all got yelled at) Also, he DEFINITELY learns a lot while there.  The other day, he was counting to 5, and I know I didn't teach it to him.  I was shocked!!!  Which one will you be sending him to?  I'm at the one in Cedar Grove, because I work literally 1 min down the road. Also, when is your son's birthday?
