Mattress Poll

I know, I know...everyone's been saying this board has been super blah and boring lately and here I am...asking the most boring question ever. But I really need quality recs. What kind of mattress do you have, and do you love it? Is there a mattress that you'd never, ever go back to? I'm looking at Sealy Springfree Beachside, Stearns and Foster Market Street Plush, and Sealy Posturepedic Spring Crossing Ultra Plush. There. How's that for a boring poll? But I'd really appreciate answers anyway. :)

We just got the Bob-O-Pedic which is Bobs furniture version of the tempurpedic memory foam. I would never ever ever sleep on anything else.  Who knew you could love a matress so much!

FI is the DM for Mattress Giant. So, he says, all three of the mattresses you mentioned are Sealy. Going from least to best it would be Springfree Beachside, Posturepedic, and Stears and Fosters. He said the S&F bed is the best Sealy has because it's a custom made mattress only made by specific Sealy plants. The second one, the posturpedic is better because of the coil system. The Springfree he said is likely a general mattress. FI says go check out Simmons. That's what we have and I love it. We have the a simmons beautyrest worldclass plush. He says the names vary by store to store so that it seems like the customer is getting a different selection. FI also really likes tempurpedic, but I heard it slept warm and I don't want to take the chance with that amount of money. HTH!

Yay! A response on The Most Boring Poll Ever! lol Thanks Neilly. Does it make you hot? I've heard Tempur and Bob-O Pedics retain body heat. I'm mattress researching like a beast for the past week. I can't afford to spend any kind of money without making sure I'm getting the right one.

Ooh! Jaime, I hit the jackpot with you! You're living with a pro! Ok, so will definitely check out the Simmons like you recommended. Is he in one particular store or does he travel from store to store? We didn't go to Mattress Giant yet. In fact, I don't know where it is... We've been to Raymour Flanigan and Sleepys.

We have the Vera Wang Susan G. Koman Cure mattress and we love it. It's made by Serta and we purchased it at Fortunoff (now out of business) so I'm not sure where it's available but I would highly recommend it!!

Hi Cheryl! I know, I haven't been on. I was out of work for three days b/c of a pinched nerve in my neck...and I'm convinced it's because our mattress sucks...so I'm on a hunt! Other than that, haven't been on b/c there's just so much to do (and by do I mean clean...these people...ughhh there was dirt everywherrreeee) at the house before we move in. I've been lurking around here and there though! ;)

It can be really hard to compare because the same mattress will have a different model name at different stores ... that way Sleepy's can have a price match guarantee without ever having to actually do it.  Such a scummy industry.  Also, it depends on what you like -- I like to sleep on a very soft mattress. We have a Sealy Posturpedic pillowtop that we like.

We have the tempurpedic, and it does make me hot, almost swealtering. Now that it's cold it will be like a rock. But once I get into it, it warms up. I don't have the heat on in our room. I have a love/hate relationship with it.

We live in GA so he manages 9 stores in ATL. But if you have any other questions he's always willing to give more info. Best thing you could know about a mattress store: beat them up on the price. Their first price is never their best, and likely their second either.
  • edited December 2011
yep, the temperpedic adjusts to room temperature. So the colder it is in the sales room the harder the bed will be. The warmer it is, the softer the bed is. They are so hard to buy and they are price controlled.
  • edited December 2011
They aren't cheap either. I didn't buy it. I inherited it from MH. It is comfy though, I just hate the heat factor. I have a really heavy down comforter on it as well, maybe I should get a lighter one on it.

This is very interesting. We want to get a Tempurpedic...now I'm wondering if whether we should or not. I hate being hot when I sleep.

MH is fine in it. I like a cold room when I sleep. In below zero weather, I have a window open. On the other hand like I said, it is really comfortable, it's hard not to pass out just getting in.

There are certain stores that sell one with a bamboo cover - it's sort of a knock off temperpedic, but it doesn't sleep as warm. Also bamboo sheets help to keep you cool no matter what the mattress.wow. I feel like I'm being of use here tonight. lol

Well...I'm glad Chelsea doesn't find this poll super boring. lol Let me share what I know so far, since you're all sharing advice. Yep, FI's got oven legs...so we're going to pass on the Tempurpedic. The reviews I'm reading are saying that the Stearns and Fosters sag too soon. I've already ruled out any type of pillowtop, although I like the mattress itself to be plush. I hear that the pillowtops form body impressions relatively quickly and then the whole mattress is shot just b/c the pillowtop gave out. The Sealy Springfree is a synthetic latex bed. It's more expensive, but there are no springs in it, it sleeps cooler than Tempurpedic, and (from what the salesperson says) it's resistant to dust mites. Gets great reviews, but I'm worried about something called "off gassing" where foams or latex beds give off some weird odor. I know that Stearns and Foster has an independent coil system and Sealy, which makes Stearns and Foster, doesn't have independent coiling. Yet for some reason the Posturepedics are more expensive than the Stearns and Fosters. This mattress business is making me tired.

i know nothing about mattresses - mine is high up and i love it lolmy friend works at sleepys - she says that they have a huge margin on the prices so you can def negotiate there! she says they almost double the price of what its actually worth
  • edited December 2011
Good to know. Maybe I can just change the cover.

Cher, who's your friend? lol Tell her I want the Knottie discount!
  • edited December 2011
About the price difference - FI says price doesn't depict quality. He said buy a simmons anyway. lol. He said the price tells you how expensive it was to make the bed. He said go with what makes you the most comfortable rather than agonizing over price because it doesn't always mean the price is better.

FI and I have a Kings Down. No clue who makes them or if they are technically any good but he has had many back surgeries and seems to like it. Although my first choice was definately some fancy tempurpedic they had in the store...... it was just way out of our price range.
  • edited December 2011
Kingsdown are the highest end mattress FI sells in his store. They are picky about the stores that get to sell them. Each one is hand made. It's crazy.

Jaime, thank you! And I wish I could respond to your sig drink poll...but I didn't get that far yet! lol Can you maybe ask FI what he thinks of latex mattresses...with no springs at all? I feel more anxiety about choosing the right mattress than I did about choosing my reception hall. lol Guess that makes sense though, right...one's 6 hours, one's six-eight hours a night.
  • edited December 2011
he says he feels fantastic about you choosing a latex mattress lol. For someone concerned with sleeping warm, latex is a good choice. He's being a comedian over here - FI says he wonders if there's an Etsy seller for mattresses.  And I know he uses that argument with his customers a lot. You spend more time in your bed than you do in your car each day, yet people are quick to blow money on their cars, but cheap when it comes to mattresses. It's good you're evaluating your options and not just getting the cheapest thing.

I love myPosturTemp by Dormia (Sleepy's carries them). It's a lower cost version of TemperPedic. It has Cool Top to keep you from getting hot. If you use a mattress pad/cover, you need to get the one specifically for memory foam otherwise that will trap heat. I learned the hard way b/c I bought a regular mattress pad at first.

hahahaha Ok Jaime's FI...touche. You're right...that was a bit odd of me to think you'd "feel" one way or another about me sleeping on latex. And no, I don't think Etsy sells mattresses...but wouldn't it be cute if I could get one monogrammed in my "event colors"? haha On another note...I'm shocked there's a star on this post. Guess it really is a slow night. But keep the reviews comin!

jaime-thanks for the info on Kingsdown....I had no idea especially because pricewise it was pretty close to the other models we were looking at. Dior-if it is in your price range we love it. and buying it was fun. You both lay on this thing that measures how your body weight is distributed and answer some questions then it tells you the best bed for you. It was fun and I HATED mattress shopping up to that point.

Yes, we went on that thing! It said he needs firm and I need soft. Fabulous. lol He's got me by 100 pounds and sleeps on his stomach (I sleep on my side) so I need a lot softer than he'd be comfortable in. So with the Kingsdown you get your side your way and his side his way? What happens when you roll over to the middle? Is it weird?

I have not noticed the Bob-O-pedic making me too warm.  I really really love it...really really
