boo renting (grumpy long vent)

FI and I just got our lease renewal. When we moved into our building it was 40% full and we got a great deal. The lease allowed them to up the rent by 10% and we tried to get them to change it at the time but to no avail. They assured us, although we did not believe them, that the company never raises rent more than 5% a year. Well they raised it 10%.  We are trying to save for a house...and the wedding. We just opened a business that is not exactly turning a profit yet and I just wish we were in a house already.  They are also trying to start charging us for parking, which we have not had to do and added a $100 late fee, which doesnt really affect us because we have never been late and dont plan on it but come on, thats a little excessive dont you think. So do we re-up for the year for the extra $180 or start looking for a new apartment. I know most people in our building are paying about $600 more a month for the same apartment but we negotiated a damn good deal and now I feel like we are being punished for it. We were hoping to only renew the lease for 6 months since we think we will be in a house by then but given what they are doing I can only imagine what that will cost us. I feeling like we are throwing our money away but I really dont want to buy a house until we have a little more financial stability and a stronger down payment. ARRGGGHHH. And here I thought I would be having a relaxing evening. If you got this far feel free to give your opinion/advice/flame/whatever but keep in mind I was diagnosed with shingles yesterday and tomorrow I have shit day at work so Im grumpy and way more annoyed about this then i think I would normally be.

No Flame!! Not at all...... I hate surprises like that, but hopefully you'll only have to stay for another half a year. And I hope you feel better! I hear shingles is no fun!

That is crazy in this economy!  I would at the very least try to negotiate it down.  Even if others in the building are paying more than you, they may have trouble filling the apartment quickly, and it is better to have you paying what you're paying for the whole year rather than to have to pay to search for a tenant and have the apartment sit empty for a few months. What area is this in?  Is it one serviced by Street Easy or other sites that have lots of info on what apartments are doing in your area?(BTW I had shingles when I was in high school and know how awful it is... feel better!)

thanks for the replies ladies and sorry for posting and running. I went to bed as soon as I left work yesterday and just got home today. Luckily the shingles arent too bad. I have a really mild case. As for the rent, it is just frustrating but we will be renewing cause we dont really have a choice. Its not easy street. It is a Korman Community. We are going to try and negotiate and I will see what happens.
