Bridal pictures/portraits

I should probably ask this on one of the national boards, but what's the point for bridal portraits? Why can't they just be taken the day of the wedding?

ditto Tiff.It does seem odd to me though that there are probably a good number of brides out there who spend four days of their lives getting pictures taken to commemorate that they're getting married (engagement, boudoir, wedding, bridal portraits/TTD/day-after)

Well I only know one person who has gotten them, my cousin who got married in 1992 in the midewest. They were taken in a studio, so I presume that's why her's in particular were not done the same day.

I saw a blog that once said the point is to get all the pictures of the bride on her day out of the way.  So indtead of taking the pics of the bride on the day of in front of the window and such you would do it beforehand.

From http://robertsweddingphotos.com/bridalportraits.htm A bridal portrait session can be located at my studio, the wedding or a location of your choice. This is a great way to test-run everything you've planned for your wedding day, inlcuding wedding gown, flowers, hair and make-up. Bridal Portraits are popular for displaying at the wedding registry table, at the reception sign-in table, or as a wedding announcement in the local newspaper.

if it is included in the price then MAYBE it would be ok (for someone else not me..lol). if it is an extra cost then hell no. To me it would be a waste of time and money bc I would have to get my hair and makeup done twice.

TTD = Trash the Dress.  You get dressed up in your wedding gown on another day to go to dirty places and mess it up?  Frolic in the ocean, roll around in grass, ride a motorcycle, walk anywhere in Times Square, that kind of thing?Bridal portraits, as others pointed out, are common in other decades and in other parts of the country.  But a decent enough number of people seem to do TTD and day after shoots around here that I don't know that it is all that weird compared to those?  Getting pictures taken in a studio seems very 1992 to me, but photojournalism hadn't really caught on in the wedding realm at that time. The question that I always have is WTF is the point of starlet pictures.  Can anyone explain those to me?

I'm all for hamming it up, but even I was beginning to feel a bit self indulgant after having my engagement pictures taken, sending out a photo STD and having photo stamps on my wedding invites. I do like the personalization of it all, but I was like DAYUM, how many pictures of me do people need? There are people on here with Engagement, Boudouir, Wedding, TTD and Starlet Pictures- that's 5 sets of pictures taken of you in a year. I guess it seems fun, but I really think I'd get a bit embarassed showing people this stuff after awhile. I also purposely picked a photographer who could do photojournalism and less traditional shots, so I didn't feel the need to have to get dressed up and do it again.

The thing that drives me crazy with TTD photos that I have seen is that alot of the time, these people are not trashing their dress.  If you are going to do it, actually trash your dress, prance around in mud, a fountain, the ocean, a lake, etc.  I have seen too many TTD photos that were essentially "bridal photos" just taken after the wedding.  Honestly, it isn't up my alley, but, don't call a post wedding photo session trash the dress if you dress doesn't get trashed!

I believe that usually one of the bridal portraits is displayed at the reception in areas where this is common, so that would be why it's done before the wedding.
  • edited December 2011
Agree that if you have a photojournalistic photographer you might not feel the need to do a TTD because they were able to get some more adant-garde type shots on the acutal wedding day?
  • edited December 2011
Didn't realize they were displayed! Well that makes sense? Excpet, why do you need a picture of you in your dress, when you're actually there, live, in person, in your dress?

Mye- you went all out with the TTD photos! Much more so than most of them that I have seen. I also really liked Melissas. Something about those rain boots! But there have been several that I have seen that I don't think are much more creative than what I had taken on my wedding day.

Excpet, why do you need a picture of you in your dress, when you're actually there, live, in person, in your dress? LOL, that I cannot explain. But it's probably just one of those things that's so common in certain areas that it doesn't seem odd at all and might even seem odd to not have it.

Mye, your TTD pictures were certainly some of the better ones I have seen.  You actually "trashed" your dress!

TTD are artsy and fun and different and cool, you cannot do them day of.  bridal portraits are totally worthless and something that is done in rednecksville or if you're like a 80 year old.

I've never actually looked at a wedding announcement in a newspaper so I had no idea. I always thought they were when you got engaged.

I'm not an expert or anything but newspaper announcements either before or after the wedding usually include pictures of the couple not just the bride. So not sure how much truth there is to that since the bridals are just pictures of the bride, right?
