Poll: What this board made me realize!

...that you probably would have never otherwise known/thought of: For me 1) I always thought the norm was that members of the bp didn't get the couple a wedding present (that was our case - no shower or wedding gift) because of the other costs incurred 2) That weddings in NJ are so much more expensive (on average) than what we paid and we thought we spent a lot 3) Photographers are a "get what you pay for" type of vendor - I just always thought "anyone can take pics" until I saw a lot of you MG's photos 4) With DJ's - that the give away type of stuff is often viewed as very tacky (every wedding I have ever been to had all that stuff)

I agree about photographers! I totally thought ANYONE could do it till I actually started researching! I will say the opposite. Before wedding planning I didn't realize venues below $100 p/p existed in Northern NJ and I was quite happy to find out they did and that you could get real packages (not just cheese and crackers).

I've learned that... Weddings are ridiculously overpriced, when I first started getting quotes from places I was floored that the cost per person seemed to start at $120, luckily I fall well below that. There are so many details that you can go crazy with, that I never even paid attention to, but now I MUST have. That people had, uplighting, cigar rollers, and photobooths.  Never saw those at any weddings and now I must have them all. That people still hired videographers and that most people consider that I must.  After seeing peoples clips I must have this now as well.

So far I have learned: 1. That this board has some great woman on it that are honest and have great knowledge.. NWR but who cares 2. That great vendors are hard to find and going off of Rec's are a must 3. That I probably should have waited to book my Photog until after I joined the site.  I do love who I have, but believe I could have found simiar work for a smaller cost 4. I must have a photobooth and need to find a way to get one! Which  means cutting costs someplace else!

    1. That I am really lucky that my parents are able to help so much with the costs of the wedding. 2. That I want a photobooth, cigar roller, b-pics and TTD pics and about a million other things I had never heard of. 3. That there is no way I could have as much done by now as I do without all the advice and reccomendations on here. 4. That I am not in the teeny tiniest way a DIYer and that people who are absolutely amaze me. 5. That I could easily spend all day researching something and get the same or better answer in about 20 min on here. 6. That Im a little bit of a closet bridezilla when it comes to planning even though I try to come across to friends and family as completely laid back about everything. 7. That I am probably way too traditional for my own good. I am still trying to convince myself that STDs and wedding websites are ok. I still cant even begin to think that way about face book or myspace but Im working on it. 8. And that I saved a lot of money not hiring a wedding planner because I get all the info I need here!

    1) NJ weddings are ridiculously expensive. 2) Hubby and I were smart to not hire a typical reception venue where we would be boxed into their food/liquor/beverage options. 3) A Women's Club is a great locale for a reception. The one in Ridgewood was perfect for us and reasonably priced. 4) We didn't hire a videographer, have a cigar table, a candy display and saved a lot of money as a result. 5) My uncle and aunt were way beyond generous for paying for our honeymoon as their wedding gift. For that we will always be in their debt. 6) Knotties referred me to my amazing florist (Connie Riemer) and makeup artist (Dona Massa). Thank you! 7) The snarky Knotties are a detriment to this site. There's no reason to be nasty if another Knottie hasn't insulted you. Can't we just get along?

that people go way overboard and classy can turn into cheesy very quickly if you try to incorporate too much.

You know what I learned today- that my wedding was probably an average price compared to everyone on the board. Here I was thinking that I was getting some deal of the century! Even people who spent a lot more p/p still came in around the same amount as I did total. I guess we just all spend our budget differently.
