Poll: Job Perks

I always like to hear about the different perks people get as a result of their job/career.  Discounts, trips, tickets to events, etc.Is it the norm in your field or is it just specific to your organization?

Our firm has Yankees, Mets and Knicks tickets that we can buy.  The Yankees tickets are $195 each, so we do not do that.  But sometimes they'll do a lottery to give them out for free if nobody bought them.If we work past 9, we get dinner (up to $25, which actually doesn't get you very far if you're dealing with tax and delivery tip) and if we work past 10, we get car service home.  I don't consider those a perk.

Uppereast, that's pretty stingy! We get dinner if we work past 7pm and car service after 9pm.We have free access to every museum and other random NYC stuff for us and up to 4 guests.Discounted gym memberships. Those are the goodies I can think of.

Any perks I got were specific to my organization. I work at the bank and they waived our origination for the mortgage which is usually 1%. But I don't know if that's the case at other banks. Also, I work at Disney seasonally and I know universal cast members don't get the perks we get (discounts, free tix, etc)

Free airfare anywhere Continental goes...even out of the country.  BUT..it is standby only so it is risky.  Then various discounts with travel companies, car rentals, etc.

I get to go on amazing trips, sometimes free, sometimes with huge discounts. Since I own my business, I can go as often as I want. The downside is that I don't get a weekly salary that I can count on.

I got a discount on my mortgage as well where i dont pay lender fees at closing.  i dont work at a bank, we just get discounts on stuff.  There are other perks like that.  I think another good one is on cars.  We get the ford x plan which is a slight bit above invoice i think. My best perk is we have a gym on my work campus.  It costs $19 a month and its pretty nice.  My FI has a free gym and free personal training.  My old job was military and we got the military rate at hotels.

I guess I cant complain about my job sometimes. By job is a huge corporation so we do get a ton of perks. Discount withDell, 1800 Flowers, HP computers, Sprint, Verizon, Apple, Costo, Ford, Macys, Sears, much more  I cant think of. Plus 50% off all retail in the store. I can get free color/cut etc.  That saves a lot of $$

i get a lot of discounts, from museums, theater, to travel, clothing, electronics, other stuff...

I don't have any. DH gets discounts for cultural events. We have not used them b/c they're not usually in this area. His company has an on-site daycare that is lower cost than a regular daycare in our area (per posts from people in NJ on the Money Matters board). We also got 1/2% lower interest on our mortgage (when we refinanced) by going with a subsidiary of his company.

Oh yeah, we have free admission to MoMA.  And we get discounts at Hertz and Avis, but I don't know how good they are.  We used to have a Tiffany's shopping event each year and Saks shopping events a few times a year where we got 15% off, but that didn't happen last year which is very sad.

I work for Disney and get into the parks free, discounts on hotels, discounts on merchandise and food there, big discounts during the holidays, etc etc. tons of perks but all if you want Disney things. we belong to some program where we get discounts on things....i don't really pay attention to those things...the only thing i take advantage of is some random percentage off of my vzw bill....and i work for aeropostale, so we get a discount on stuff in the store, but, that does me no good....my hubs on the other hand...we get the best perk of all from him...free cable and free internet...we have to pay for the phone though....

I don't really get any perks at my current job. At my first job I worked for a newspaper ... we got dinner on Friday nights because we were on deadline and worked until midnight, and sometimes if someone got a gift basket in the mail we all shared it (since reporters could not accept gifts). I used to work for a women's magazine, and since they frequently printed recipes the test kitchen people would make them and then they'd put it in the kitchen for everyone to eat - so anything from appetizers to dinner-type food to desserts. We also did a lot of product and fashion reviews, so they'd leave stuff out that we could take home ... kitchenware, perfume, accessories, books. We also occasionally got dinner if it was a late deadline night - just some catering trays served buffet-style. I liked the newspaper better because you could order anything you wanted from a great local Spanish restaurant.

Apartment on campus.  But you do have to be on duty for the campus about 3 weeks a semester. In most residence life offices you will find that you live on campus or nearby for free.  Some schools have nicer apartments than others. Some offer townhouses, if i stay here and become the director one day I will have a house that is on campus and not have to pay anything for it (i think only cable).Free education for myself/spouse/family (pay the taxes and tech fees). Meal cards to be used in the cafe during the school year. 8 Fridays off in the summer (i thought all colleges did this but they dont)Discount for BJs memebership Opportunity to have insurance through NJMWhen I worked in student life i went to every event that I planned for free and usually was able to bring a guest for free.  But you are technically working bc you are a "chaperon" for the students. I def made sure to plan certain broadway plays and sporting events that I knew i would like

we have basically no dress code and can wear whatever we want (jeans, flip flops, shorts - anything goes) so i consider that a major perk.  we also have summer fridays (half days every friday or off every other) which is a great perk.  i can get free tickets to the daily show and sometimes other company events.  some of these are specific to my company. we are a large corporation so i have lots of discounts for gym memberships, theater tickets, wireless phones, certain car brands, flowers, etc.  i think this is the norm for a lot of large corporations.  i used to work for a big 4 accounting firm and we had a lot of the same benefits.

DH and I are both teachers. Other than 15% off our phone bill with Verizon, and certain clothing store discounts (10-15% off all year round). Also, being part of the NJEA there are some discounts available for vacations, restaurants, etc- but I need to do the research and figure out what's out there.

I work in tv. One of my favorite union benefits is the movie screenings in Nov/Dec as studios try to get votes for Oscar nominations. We also get random movies screened throughout the year.

Other than Bar Association discounts I dont have any perks like most others but - I work the hours I want for the most part, I can knot freely at work :)  I dont have a limit on reasonable time off and I absolutely love my job, which for me is the best perk.

I love talking about perks...when I worked in the cosmetics industry I would get free Chanel perfume and makeup and 90% handbags and accessories, which was nice, but my paycheck went right back into the company.  At Hermes I got 30% Birkins and free perfume, which was nice.  Then I went to La Prairie, they paid 100% for school and health insurance and they have amazing skin care products which were free and free massages at the spa (limited to 3 per year).  Then I was at InStyle at we had 20 vacation days, 2 personal, 7 summer fridays, free paid gym membership, tuition reimbursement, all the free Time Inc mags you want, and I worked from home at least one day a week, which was nice.  Now I am in pharma, all I get are cheaper drugs and my gym paid for.  I kinda miss the old days, but still have friends for the hook up.

I work for UMDNJ, so I am considered a state employee. Right now my benefits are free and I have an awesome pension. I get discounts on verizon bill and accessories, Dell, Apple, Enterprise. I have a free gym down the hall with Direct TV (which is great). We could also use the Rutger's facilities.

We don't have anything that I would consider a real perk.  The only things I can think of are: Very casual dress code which saves me a ton of money. Every year around this time they give us a box which includes everything to make a complete family Thanksgiving dinner.

i get to wear jeans, swears whatever i like to work.  i can come and go as i please as long as my work is complete.  and i also get to visit costa rica and stay for free whenever i like.
  • edited December 2011
i can also take as much sick/vacation time without taking advantage of it.

I have never really had great "perks" in any job that I have had (the best was in my last job, they did pay for a Continental Presidents Club memebership bc I travelled so much).  But, my father has great perks with his job. He works for a liquor distributor and gets to bring home cases of booze and wine from breakage pretty frequently.  We never have to pay for alcohol in our house unless we want something really specific.  I have so much booze in my house that DH and I seriously look like such alcoholics!

Erika what do you do and are there any openings? Wearing sweats to work and staying in costa rica for free sounds like my dream job.
  • edited December 2011
i am a sales assistant for a hedge fund.  i wish there were openings, but i am the only employee besides the general partners.

I am the only employee @ my company so there are no real perks...but my boss owns a country club so DH can golf for free whenever he wants & its a members only club and We get to attend any of the social events at the CC for free A good friend of my boss' has sky box tix @ the Izod center so whenever there's an event there/Nets game that I want to see I have a pretty good chance of getting the tix for free My co-worker has season passes (great seats) to Giants and whenever he doesn't want to go he gives them to DH and I (lol) Dress is very casual and my vaca/sick days are pretty leanient (without taking advantage)
