Groom's cake- please explain & when to serve

This might sound kind of dumb, but what exactly IS a groom's cake and when do people typically serve it?  I have not seen one done at any receptions I've been to, but from what I've seen it's usually a cake done to reflect the groom's interests.  Wait, I lie, the only groom's cakes I've seen have already been cut up and are usually in wax people for people to take (personally, it's always been done in a really unappetizing manner and no one takes it).

I was thinking of doing one for my FI with an Eagles theme (which kills me b/c I am a Giants fan, but know my FI will get a kick out of it) and serving it at our RD instead of at the reception.  At our reception we already have wedding cake, plus our guests get their choice of another dessert, so it's already a lot.  I'd rather do it at the RD among our family & BP where people will actually get a chance to see it and enjoy it.  I'm just not sure if that's the correct thing to do with a groom's cake, or if it's traditionally served at the reception.

What have you ladies done/planning to do?

I heard of a friend doing it and she did it at her RD as well.  Personally I think that makes more sense because you already have a cake at the actually wedding.

And yes, its a cake to reflect his interests... so while I completely understand your pain, an Eagles cake would be appropriate :)   Maybe you can write Go Giants super tiny somewhere!

Typically at the rehersal dinner... Usually a cake that reflects the groom fi's will be a football stadium or football

I think the groom's cake is originally a southern tradition at wedding receptions, but in our area has morphed into something of a rehearsal dinner tradition. I surprised my H with a Scrabble cake at our RD, although I let him come to the tasting and choose the flavor combos. If you are in the market for a vendor I highly recommend Cake Fiction.

<div>Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm going to try the place where we're getting our wedding cake from, Bovella's, first but if they can't do what I'd like then maybe I'll check out Cake Fiction.  BTW, was that your Scrabble cake I saw on their website???</div>

Yes, a grooms cake is traditionally a southern thing. You serve it at the same time as the wedding cake, and it is usually displayed close to your wedding cake reflecting your new husband's interests. My FI and I have been living in FL for 2 years so I was surprising him with a grooms cake. He is a pilot and obsessed with his mustang. I planned on having an airplane parked on a taxiway, with his car next to it and our two dogs peeking out of the window. lol
They are really cool to have at a wedding. I went to one recently in FL where the grooms cake was a nasa shuttle, it was great, and everyone wanted pictures of it.

Paula at Cake Fiction is amazing. She did my grooms cake which we served at the RD as well. She did a poker table cake. I just looked and its on the website! I have to tell you that because I asked for DH and I to be sitting at the table, i got quoted upwards of $800. Paula did the cake for $300. She was wonderful to work with!

Got it.  Since I'm planning to do it for the RD, I only need a cake for 30 people, so hopefully that will help keep cost down as opposed to doing one for the reception guests.

LOL yes, that is our cake! The tiles spell out all of my H's favorite things, and she made two player tile racks with our names spelled out. The best part was how incredible it tasted. We were eating leftovers for two weeks. ETA: I paid about $300 for it. A splurge to be sure, but worth every penny. :)

<div>It totally depends on where you go and how elaborate you get it.  I got dh his cake from where we got our wedding cake.  It was a much simpler design and I'm not sure if it's because of that or because we got our wedding cake from there too that it was so cheap, only $40.  I decided to surprise him at the reception since we already had dessert planned for the rehearsal dinner.</div><div>
