Name change, Social Security form

I remember some of you MGs saying that you mailed your Social Security name change request form, rather than waiting at the SS office.

Besides your certified marriage certificate, did you have to send anything else with it? Such as your actual passport, or a photocopy of your passport or driver's license?

I'd rather mail it than go to the office in person, if I can.

I sent my passport in with the application. They sent it back to me and then the next day I got my SS card in the mail. But, I'm OOT so I'm not sure if you can do it up in NJ.

Looks like you send your Marriage Certificate and passport. They don't accept photocopies.

    Thanks!

Now, another stupid question ... if I decide to mail it, do I just mail it to my local office (Jersey City for me), or any office I want?

I went to the Glen Rock office and also was very quick. I was one of two people there (and I made DH go with me!! If I'm taking your name you get to sit through the annoying paperwork haha)

Haha, if I end up going in person then I will totally tell MH that he ought to come and sit with me :P

I'm pretty much out of paid time off, though, so I don't want to go to the office during a weekday if it can be done by mail. There isn't a close-enough SS office to my job where I could go on my lunch break. And the last time I went to a Jersey City office to get an official document was for my passport and that was a NIGHTMARE, so I don't want to have to go there again, ugh. Hoboken was also super-slow when I needed my SS card replaced a few years ago.

But I'll keep Clifton and Glen Rock in mind if I have to go in person, thanks!

I would double check. I just tried to do mine about a month and a half ago and they said that NJ does not accept mail ins. I had to go to the office Parsippany, luckily I work in the same town so I went on my lunch break. I only waited about 15 mins.

If you go to an office to change it, do you get your new card right then and there?  Or, do you still have to wait for it in the mail?

If you can go during the week, I would just go to the office.  Honestly, I was in and out in literally 5 minutes on a weekday.

No, they will mail it to you. Mine took about a week.
