Programs?

This might be a really stupid question, but is it necessary to have programs if you are having the ceremony (which will be short and sweet) and reception all in one place?

Thanks!

Re: Programs?

  • I say no. I only think you need them if there is a long ceremony ie: Catholic mass or some sort of other ceremony in a Church or synagogue where people need to follow along. I'm having everything in one place so I am not having them. I think they are a waste and guests don't really want them. I can't remember the last wedding I went to that had them.

  • We decided not have have them and no one noticed.  We also had a short ceremony at our venue also, so we thought they would be a waste of money and paper.

  • I don't think they are necessary. For a short ceremony at the ceremony - don't worry about it. The only reason to do it could be to have a momento of the day, but of course you will have many other momentos...so it's not necessary.

  • Thanks. I thought that they were not necessary either but wanted a few other opinions.

  • It may sound silly, but I like having programs.  I like knowing who the bridal party members are and what is going on with the ceremony.  I made programs for our wedding and I'm still happy I did.  Plus they were fans so if our guests got hot during the ceremony they had something to cool themselves off with.

  • I'm torn on this. My ceremony and reception are at the same place and our ceremony is going to be short.  I like looking at programs when I'm waiting at someone's wedding but they do seem like another expense that you could probably skip.  I can't decide!
  • If you don't have the time or budget to create them, I would skip programs. Most people won't miss them. When I'm weddings, I may look at them for a few minutes but then I put it down or have to awkwardly hold on to for the rest of the ceremony and wonder what to do with them afterwards. We decided to forgo programs and I was happy it was one less thing I needed to worry about.

  • Like flojo, I'm conflicted. We're haivng a longer wedding (Catholic, full Mass) where many people will be unfamilar with the new Mass (people from both families, but especially mine, tend to be cradle Catholics who rarely attend mass), so I feel like I should do programs so they can follow the new wording. Broke, new-teacher me, however, says ""Spend less money! Their unwillingness to attend Mass is their loss!"

So ... I'm lost. No advice, OP ... just comiseration.

  • not necessary at all!
  • People have eyes. They can see what is happening. Don't need to read it. Let them enjoy the ceremony and be in the moment instead of reading to see what is next.
