Name Change Question

Hey there,

So DH and I are picking up our marriage license today.  I have a question about changing my name for social security.  If I go to the office opposed to sending the form, do I get to keep the documents when I go home or is it just like dropping it in the mailbox?

I am thinking Social Security, then DMV, then I'll get into everything else.  Also, teachers, did you change your teaching license?

Thanks!

I went to the SS office in Jersey City and they just looked at my ML.  I took it home with me.

I am a teacher too and I have not changed my license. I have 2 and they are about $60 each to change. Also I'm not planning on leaving my position because I have tenure anytime soon so my boss said there is no need to.  If there was ever a question of my licensing they would just show a copy of my ML which I had to submit to school with my name change so it's on file.

  • yep, you get to keep your docs, and they will mail you a SS card (mine took a little less than a week). I went to the hackensack office around 2 and it took about 10 mins.

DMV you only need to show your ML. They don't need your new SS card. so you could get both done on the same day if you're taking the day off. I waited about 1.5 hours at the lodi DMV mid-day, so bring a book!

Also, on your SS, you can have 2 middle names, but DMV only has space for one middle initial.

<div>Thanks everyone! Do you need to take a new license picture? I just did the SS card but if I need a new license picture I'd rather wait til another day lol</div><div>
</div><div>I think I'll wait on the teacher certificate, too.  I've had my provisional for two years and haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, so I won't waste the money.</div>

I did not need to take a new license picture.  I had the choice.
  • Thanks everyone!  Well I did it all in one day, and I'm tired!
