Alternative bride trying to decide on music...

Hi guys,
I had originally planned on just creating an ipod playlist myself for my wedding reception as my fiance and I are not big dancers and didn't want to emphasize that aspect. Now, however, I'm thinking that having dancing would (obviously) make the reception more fun for our guests. The only thing I worry about is the music selection and cost. I am looking for relatively inexpensive options while keeping our style in mind. I want the music to be crowd-pleasing but not sound like a Seaside club. This leads me to think a band might be a better and potentially unique sound, but I also don't want the vibe to be too dated. Can anyone recommend an option that would walk the line between classic and modern? I know I can guide DJs to our style in music but I have been to too many weddings with really obnoxious, cheesy DJs and it makes me nervous. Any guidance would be appreciated!!

  • I moved your post here because you are going to need some local recommendations for DJs.

Bands are expensive, so unless you have some leeway in your budget you should probably focus on finding a DJ who fits with your vibe and style.  The best way to do that is to get recommendations and make appointments to meet with them and see who you "click" with.

  • Have you been to any weddings where you did like the music?  I agree with you - I find most djs and wedding music rather obnoxious and loud. I wanted to give people the option to dance, but not force people who are not dancing to sit at their tables and stare at each other cause the music is too loud to talk with one another.

We went to a wedding this past summer where I enjoyed the style of music and I took his card while there. If you want, send me a pm and I can give you his contact information. (I don't think he has a site - this didn't matter to me since I chose him after seeing him at the other wedding...)

  • We just booked Chuck Russo; he's awesome.  He prides himself on being low-key and not one of those "in your face" DJs (he even says he's not a "jersey shore dj").  We've seen him at 2 other weddings, and he is super versatile.  We had him over to chat about 2 weeks ago, and we just clicked with him.  He got our style right away, and had lots of great ideas that fit our vision.

  • Our DJ was Steve Bloom from Steve Bloom Entertainment. They have a few DJ's in the company, but we personally worked with Steve and he was wonderful. He quickly responded with a phone call to my inquiry from his website form. When we met with him we clicked immediately. He was also by far the best price quote of people we spoke with.

  • I second silver0319 that chuck is awesome and reasonably priced. We have an alternative music taste and he's been great to work with.

  • We wanted a band- FI is a musician and really wanted something enjoyable and not too cliche wedding band. We are booking the weisenheimers, they are pretty affordable for a band and more of a feel good rock cover band than wedding singer. Check em out.

  • We went with DJ Alias from Scratch Wedding for this very reason... I didn't want anything that sounded like a Jersey shore club.  He was awesome and working with the company was great.  They were one of our favorite vendors.
