march vs april reception prices?

FI and I are in the early stage of compiling a list of possible reception venues.  We've decided on early spring 2014, most likely the second weekend of April.  We are open to late March, depending on availability and price.  A lot of the venues I've contacted consider April to be off-season, but has anyone found a significant difference in the price between March and April?

  • IWhen I was visiting venues, the majority of the venues used Easter was the cut off.  Before Easter it was one price and then after Easter it was another.  We went with The Tides and chose the last weekend in April.  Their prices increased May 1 by like $15pp.

  • I think it will really depend on where in NJ you are looking. I know my venue (The Breakers in Spring Lake) has a high(June-Sept), medium(Apr-May, Oct-Nov), and low (Dec-Mar) season. My months are approximate. But some other venues in the area had high season as May-June, Sept-Oct, etc. I think it will really depend on the type and location of venues you are looking at.

  • The venues we visited considered December through March to be low season, and April and November to be medium season, meaning prices were 10 to 20 dollars higher than low season, but not as high as busy season.

Are you having a church ceremony? If so, you definitely need to find out if you can have a wedding ceremony during lent, which will be half of the month of March in 2014. Most churches do not having wedding ceremonies during lent because it is a somber time.
  • Thank you to everyone for your help so far!

We are looking mostly in Morris County, and a few places in Sussex and Somerset counties.  Most of our guest list is OOT, so we don't want to be too far from Newark Airport or a train station.

We are 90% sure that we are not having a church ceremony.  We may (depending on the reception venue's location) end up having a ceremony at a nearby Unitarian church.  I don't think having the wedding during Lent will be an issue for us.

Going off of this, please remember if you're having a Friday wedding that Catholic guests may need some vegetarian options, due to the whole no meat on Friday's during lent - just something to keep in mind for your guests' comfort :)

We are getting married the weekend after Easter (which is really early in 2013). It worked out that we got the last weekend before prices went up about $15 a person. The nice thing about that, too, is that we don't need to get ceremony flowers for our church, as it will already have tons of flowers for Easter!
  • My church didn't have a problem with marrying us during Lent, but I would def check it out to make sure with your church if thats the way you go.

Some venues we looked at had various prices for throughout the year.  The one we booked didn't.  Their prices went off the menu and just the menu.
