obtaining certified copy of marriage certificate

hi all!

i'm having a really difficult time trying to figure out how to obtain a copy of my marriage certificate in order to change my name. unless i'm just not searching properly, it seems really confusing. do i just contact the county where i was married? and this weekend, two weeks after the wedding, hubs realized the wrong county was recorded wrong on the license application. so now i've got to get that fixed but i can't even seem to find the person i could speak to about that in ocean county.

also, how long after you got married was your certificate ready or was there no waiting?

i'm going through the whole process of my name change when we return home from our honeymoon but thought i'd get a bit of a head start on paperwork.

any help? thank you! :)

You need to call the town that you were married in. They are the ones that will get you a copy. We got ours 10 days after the wedding.

  • I completely forgot to request it and, 3 months later, just called the clerk and asked for 3 copies.  They charged a fee which I mailed in.  They came in less than a week.

Contact the county in which you were married - they should have a record of it and will fix any errors.  GL!

How did it go?  Any pics to share?

  • Def call the county where you got married, hopefully the officiant recorded it and sent it in to the correct Clerk's office.  we picked ours up almost a month later bc we did not have time to go but when I called, they said it was ready a few days after the wedding.
    Good luck.

  • The license had to have been filed with the registrar within in the actual town you were married in. For instance, i was married in Spring Lake Heights. I had to contact their registrar directly to obtain a copy. You fill out a form and mail in the $ for it (Mine was $10 for the first copy and $5 for each additional copy, i got 3). You send that to them with a self addressed, stamped return envelope.
  • thank you, ladies for your help! figured it out and put the request in!
