I think Dessy deserves the prize! They only charged us the wholesale price and are shipping our dresses direct to our house today. They also told us that there are 12 affected orders from Nonchalance AND some orders were never even placed!

The folks at Jim Hjelm weren't nearly as helpful but then again, I'm sure they're out thousands of dollars too.

Wedding's in 3 weeks, only reason I'm not panicking is that I know all of my dresses exist, it's just a question of getting them to me in time.

I am in the same boat as all of you.  I have five BL dresses now being sent to Bridal by Roma in Clifton. Unfortunately they are charging me $15 more per dress than the girls paid at Nonchalance claiming that is why nonchalance is out of business, gave unreasonable discounts.

I am in the process of filing a claim with the NJ consumer fraud division and I definitely plan to go tomorrow (which coincidentally is the SAME day they told me last week my dresses would be in) to, at the very least, let them know how scummy they are.

I also got a call from Nonchalance but I only have 3 of my 8 dresses. They didn't give me a time to come in and the number they gave me is dead...no one picks up....

Does anyone have correct contact info for them??

I'm also in the same boat as all of you ladies. However, my wedding isn't until next year so I still have time. For me, its more about losing the $ that might not be refunded, and having my girls shell out even more $ then I wanted them to. My dresses are Amsale, and Amsale has been more than on top of the situation. They contacted me the day after I received the call from Nonchalance, and told me I would be receiving my dresses at cost. This is at least something positive to come out of this nightmare! Lisa, from Amsale, told me she has 17 orders from Nonchalance that she is currently trying to take over. She has been amazing to deal with. I feel sorry for all of the other brides that are experiencing difficulties with their designers. I encourage all of you to contact your designers directly and see what they can do for you in this unfortunate situation. A lot of brides have been asking for a phone number to get in touch with Nonchalance. They have called everyone from a "private number", in fact my phone didn't even ring, it just went to voicemail when they called and it was marked "private". The store is closed. There is no way of contacting them at this point, unless you go down to the store on Friday between 4pm and 7pm. Also, I'm not sure if anyone is going to get their money back on Friday considering they're obviously Bankrupt. I was informed their "trustee" would be contacting me at a later date to refund any cash payments that were made in my order, and to dispute all credit card payments that were made (that are clearly after the 60-90 day dispute time). I will be surprised if I see a dime of it, but I'm hoping for the best. I would think the reason for them to be open on Friday is for any brides that have orders ready for pick up, to come pick up their dresses from the store. I don't think refunds are going to happen, even if you kick and scream, its just not realistic. My heart goes out to all of the brides who have weddings coming up within the next 8 weeks or so and are at a loss for what to do at this point, but hopefully this information helps you out.

Leleiossa - I am getting married in November and I have 11 bridesmaid dresses on order which are now on hold because Jim Hjelm never received a payment from Nonchalance.  I still have not received a phone call from them yet and I am pissed.  Jim Hjelm is really not being helpful.  In order for us to get the dresses we have to go thru another bridal store and pay for the dresses in full.  So the $140 down payment that everyone made is now gone.  I dont think thats fair that everyone should get screwed. (8) out of 11 of my girls all paid cash.  I have the contract from Nonchalance and the slips the girls received once they gave their deposit.

Stephie-You're right, this whole thing is very unfair to us. I'm sure you can go to the store and attempt to get your money back. I just don't think it's realistic being that they said I would have to wait to hear from their "trustee" (lawyers). If they don't have any $, I'm not sure how they would present us all with refunds. I would definitely pursue action against them if you don't get contacted in the future.

Leleiossa - thank you.  This whole thing just completely sucks.  I am still waiting on their phone call telling that they are closed.  If I havent even gotten that phone call I most likely wont get a call in the future - LOL.  Good luck to you.  Tomorrow is going to be nuts, I am getting there very early.

To all you people who feel bad that the store closed - they closed and STOLE money from people and are not providing the dresses or refunds, you feel bad for theives?  There's no way they had no idea that they were having financial troubles.  You don't just wake up one morning and realize you have no money.
My bridal party of 7 ordered their dresses back in FEB and we were finally supposed to get them this week.  Because it's been so long, we are having trouble disputing the credit card charges and now have to pay for the dresses AGAIN!
Luckily they did place our order so the dresses are ready to ship from the manufactuers.
we ordered 1/2 of the dresses from Dessy - they are amazing and so helpful!  they are only charging us wholesale cost and will ship them to me at home.
Avlina Valenta (which is a few blocks from where I work in NYC) refuses to do anything like this,, and is now forcing us to go through Park Avenue Bridals. That means that I now not only have to go through a retailer who is now charging me the marked up retail price.  Gary over there is being helpful, but it seems rediculous to have to fo through them when the order is already boxed up at the warehouse, and they could ship it to me just as easily, for the same cost ParkAveBRidals will pay.

Yeah. The Alvina Valenta/Jim Hjelm folks are going to get a little letter from me after this is all over comparing their attitude in this to the experience we had with Dessy!

I was just there today about an hour ago (Thursday) and they were open. Apparently the owner Kristen has a serious illness and this is why they are closing. They happily helped me and gave me a copy of my receipt so I could take it to Park Avenue Bridal in Verona. Call there and ask for Gary. They will handle it all. Best of luck to all. Everyone will be getting their money back. If you paid cash or check you should be getting it back within a week. And everyone who paid with credit card should contact cc company and get reimbursed. So it will all be okay. No need to panic I know it sucks my bffs wedding is 6 weeks away. Take care all :)

This store owner has no morals. She purposely gave me a 25% discount on my 5 bridemaid dresses back in March, knowing that she would never pay the dress manufacturer. I dont understand how some people can be such scumbags. Hopefully, she will end up in jail, where all criminals deserve to go. I would be surprised if she actually showed her face on Friday. The store is all boarded up and the store is cleared out.

Firemansgirl228 - They told you that Kristin was sick and thats why they were closing??? All of us are being told that Nonchalance never paid for one single dress.  They told you that everyone is getting their money back even if they paid with cash??? I was told by Gary that I have to pay for all my dresses in full.  My order is on hold at Jim Hjelm until they receive a payment.  I was told by Gary that no one was going to be reimbursed unless they paid by credit card.  (8) out of my 11 girls paid cash.  Till this day, no one from Nonchalance has called me to say they were closing up shop.  What do we believe?

Just went to the store. The owner Kristin's parents and husband were there. They too said she is very ill and that is why the store closed. The didn't realize how much the business was affected until now, hence the reason for all the dress issues. Apparently for all those with JLM dresses, they have a COD line of credit. So the dresses that were ordered and paid for should have been paid for and should not have to be paid for twice. However I just sent a fax to the bridal store in Verona, paying for all 11 of my dresses again so we get them in time for my wedding. I don't know what to believe, but I thought I should share this news.

The owners mother said she has been there all day and will continue to be there today and tomorrow to answer all your questions/concerns. I would recommend going in and seeing the situation for yourself.

From what Jim Hjelm told me is that all 11 of my dresses are ready to be shipped but the order is on hold because they have never received payment. From what others have been posting, Bill Levkoff said that Nonchalance owes them thousands, then they are being sued, or filing for bankruptcy, who knows what to believe. I dont understand.  No matter what, no one should have to lose their deposits and pay for these dresses on top of that and this is what I am being told by Park Ave. If you know your sick, why close so quickly, you have to know that at some point you will be closing your doors for good.  Dont you make it a point to contact all customers & not just wake up one day and decide to close and give everyone days notice.  If your sick, then why disconnect your phone, shut down your website.  It just seems a little strange to me.  But I guess everyone will find out for themselves tomorrow. No matter what, it was very unprofessional.  Maybe they didnt think by closing would become this huge thing.  Its now Thursday and I still have not gotten a call from anyone at Nonchalance and I had an appt this Saturday to order the flower girl dresses.  I think everyone deserves to know the truth and they can at least give us that

I don't know why some are getting all upset with me, I am simply relaying what I was told. I too asked Kristins mother why they shut down their websites, facebook page etc and aren't answering calls etc she said they have a huge volume of people they are trying to contact. I was told by the end of the week everyone would be contacted. I talked to Jim Hjelm and was told they don't get the money from the retailer until they're shipped or ready to ship when they have a contract with bridal shops. They said that Non chalance has brought them tons of business over the years and they don't nope what happened. So anyway I guess in time if this isn't the truth it will come out eventually. But all I know is I already contacted my credit card company and refund is in the works then I will have to pay park avenue and my dress will be completed around august 9th. It does suck but at least the dresses will still be received. If anyone needs anymore info on how to contact manufacturer or park avenue id be happy to help. And an FYI I am in no way affiliated with non chalance or anyone working there. I have done business with them for years and while I think its awful how they abruptly closed I do know that they have been there for 18 years and vie dealt with them many times no problems. Anyway lets hope we all get our dresses. You can reach me at Firemansgirl2282@yahoo.com if I can help you in anyway I will. I know how much this sucks. And regardless of tbe situation in my opinion they should have had someone else handle it and keep their word this does suck. But lets just hope in the end we find out what happened and all get our dresses. Take care ladies!

Apparently facebook pages and store website was closed because they couldn't possibly respond to all people. But it really should have been handled better. Like posting "Ill stricken owner " etc or something like that. So now I too am wondering of I was lied to by the seemingly nice mother.

Hi everyone, this is Adam Stephan again from Channel 7, WABC. We are heading to the store now to do an interview with the owner's mother. She has promised to talk to us and set the record straight. I'm not sure what she's going to say, but it will be on the 11pm news again tonight. I'll update if anything changes.

It still just doesn't seem right. A website or any form of social media is the BEST way to communicate with the masses. Very shady. And now I'm supposed to take off a day of work to get down there bc I can't talk to someone on the phone? Thats ridiculous! They have already inconvenienced everyone enough, at least have the decency to take a phone call or be there on Saturday if you are demanding everyone come in person to speak to them. Firegirl, sorry for getting mad at you, but you have to admit this whole thing sucks and is not fair to anyone of their customers.

I completely agree it sucks and is unfair to us all :( Just read an article on dailyrecord.com if u wanna read it go there. It said they promised to be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 6 pm. Hope this helps! I too am looking forward to seeing abc interview tonight!

Well I don't know what is going on, I posted in another thread in this forum but it is NOT neccessarily true that people will be getting their money back.  My bridesmaids are calling their banks cuz they used debit cards and it is a lot harder with a check card/debit card.  They may not get the money back for a month, if ever, and the banks are giving them a hard time since its been 90 days since the purchase was made.  One bank even told one of my bridesmaids she would have to prove that Nonchalance knew back in May that they wouldn't be able to fulfill the order!

By the way  Lisa at Bill levkoff did tell me that the way it is usually done, at least with this designer, is the designers don't get paid until delivery.  They don't get the money for the dresses upfront.  Seems a strange way of doing things if you ask me! I am aggravated with them as well, I think they should be doing what other designers are doing and shipping the dresses to one of the wedding party at wholesale cost.

I have read people on here bought their dresses in cash, full deposit, as recently as Saturday and I would be very surprised if the store didn't know on Saturday that they would be closing permanently on Monday.  I'm suspicious about the reasons behind this as I have heard other rumors about what happened.

I really don't know what to do....Flair Designs, the alterations people for Nonchalance, totally messed up my mom's dress for my wedding in 2 weeks!  It is so tight on her that she can barely sit down.  She picked it up today and they wouldn't let her try it on, made her pay in cash and when she got it home she realized they made it so tight and did such a shody job.  The dress looks absolutely awful on her.  The hem is all uneven and way too shor, the straps are digging into her underarm, the bodice is all uneven, the cups are way too big...it goes on and on.  Even adding fabric to this dress and having another seamstress try to fix it seems like a long shot.  I'm pretty sure the dress is ruined. This is a Jim Hjelm dress and I have no idea if I should call them or try to get the money back from Nonchalance and start over and get a dress rushed for her.  Please help!! :o(
  • edited December 2011
Why don't you try to go to another seamstress and see if they can fix it? They can usually work wonders :)
  • edited December 2011
She's going to go tomorrow to another seamstress to see if anything can be done...I'm going to go to Nonchalance and give them a piece of my mind.  You know what I think is really sick and twisted...how Kristin and her mother are trying to get sympathy by saying she's very ill.  Is she "ill" in the head?  How do you take money from people without ever intending to give them what they paid for?  That's called stealing.  She deserves all of this bad PR and I don't feel sorry for her in the least bit.  I'm positive that she told the seamstresses at Flair to throw together those dresses quickly and get paid in cash and not let people try them on because she wants to get her money and get out of dodge.  Horrible woman!
  • edited December 2011
Well to be fair -- That seamstress is just someone they recommend, nothing to do with Kristin herself. Also I have no idea if the illness is true or not, but if it is...who knows maybe she wasn't even the one making business decisions..
  • edited December 2011
I'm pretty sure the seamstress isn't just someone they recommend.  Flair Designs is closing too...don't you think that's sort of strange for them to have to close just because Nonchalance is closing if they are their own separate company?  I think Kristin wants people to believe that Flair is just someone they recommend because they don't want to take responsibility for their crappy work.  I think Kristin is sneaky and calculating and it's finally all caught up to her.

Just wanted to let you all know...I just went to nonchalance to try and get my money back. I had read that the store would be open today for people whose dresses are ready to be picked up. I am a bridesmaid and I made a cash deposit for a dress at the beginning of May. I cannot get reimbursed from a credit card company, as Nonchalance has been instructing people, so the store has stiffed me because the dress is not ready from the manufacturer, and the store never paid the manufacturer. The store had police security so they must have anticipated there being a scene since they are ripping off so many people. I made my way into the store and demanded my money back and attempted to deliver a letter from my lawyer demanding a refund. There were several men in suits (probably lawyers) who would not accept the letter, would offer no information, and several young girls who were unbelievably rude and nasty. No one would give me any information about what was going on, (clearly they are bankrupt because one of them mentioned a trustee, ding, ding!), and no one would give me any information how, when, from whom, what the process was going to be for how I was going to get my money back. That was all I wanted and they wouldn't give it to me, so clearly they have no intention of refunding me my money. They said we'll contact you. I said, you don't have my name or phone number! I am so appalled that people could treat people so appallingly. This goes beyond any kind of horrible treatment I have ever received at ANY establishment. They are liars, they have no intention of returning anyone's money. They should be ashamed of themselves. So sorry to all the rest who are victims of such horrible people.
