Ring appraisals

Does anyone have suggestions of where to go in northern jersey? my ring came from michael c fina, but the center stone was passed down to me, so they would only appraise the surrounding stones and setting, not the center stone. Someone recommended a place in the city near where i work but they want $250 to do it! seems very steep for just one center stone. TIA!

I have a recommendation but it is not in the city or north jersey. She's in Long Island, but it's just over the Throgs Neck Bridge, so it's not that far. We got a 6 page report on my ring, she took pictures and provided all kinds of details. She's also an expert witness and has done work with many celebrities, and also worked to expose fradulent businesses. She was really interesting and knowledgeable to work with. I think we paid between $100-$150, I can't remember exactly. I think she's def worth the drive. Here's her info

I also had my center stone passed down to me, but bought the setting at Jared. They have a jeweler come in once a month to do appraisals and I was pretty happy with the jeweler we had. I don't think it matters where you bought the ring to have it appraised there, the jeweler is not affiliated with Jared at all. HTH!

The appraisal prices vary based on the complexity of the piece. If an appraiser is making a report on just the center stone it will not be accurate with the stone set into the ring. It would need to be loose to be properly examined and there isn't much point to having 2 separate appraisals on one ring. If you had your house broken into and the ring was stolen submitting 2 appraisals to your insurance company would make their job and the jeweler working on a replacement quote more difficult. Just appraise the ring as a whole.

Littman/Fred Meyer stores have appraisals a few times a year and they are usually taking place at the end of the summer and again before the holidays. Many jewelry stores have this option.

Try Fords Jewelers - I'm not sure how much they charge, but they did mine.

Hmmm, interesting. My center stone was also passed down to me, but FI went to a family jeweler for the setting. He appraised the center stone for him before placing it in the setting.

My ring was passed to me. I went to Devon Jewler in Wyckoff and it was great! They ended up building my wedding band because we really liked them.

I took mine to Martin Jewelers in Cranford for an appraisal. An appraisal came with the ring when MH bought it (it came from a website, danforthdiamond.com) but I wanted a second opinion. Martin Jewelers confirmed that the Danforth description of the diamond was accurate, and they actually gave it a higher appraisal value than Danforth did.

I forget exactly how I found Martin Jewelers, but it was from the American Gemological Society website or something like that. Whatever society it was, it had a list of accredited appraisers. There's an article on the Knot's actual website about how to find an appraiser and I got the society's website from there.

I'm usingCorbo Jewelers in Clifton but am going today and will let you know how it was. They charge 75$ for each piece (my ring is 2 pieces)

I wouldn't overthink it, you just want to make sure you are covered for a complete loss.  They should be conservative and teh amount should be about 50% higher than the "street price" (full retail).

My fiance designed the ring with the center stone from one jeweler and the band from another. I ended up getting it appraised at Diamond Hut in Jersey City and it was $100.
