Really Upsetting Make up Trial :( vent

I was so excited to have a make up trial today! I LOVE make up, had saw this womans portfolio on line and made an appt for a trial. She was a very sweet person so I feel really bad complaining, but the trial was terrible. I showed her a bunch of pictures, talked about what I like and what I don't like, showed her my everyday makeup and what I wanted to play up with it without looking like a drag queen. I got the ok, ok, no problem...now here's what colors I've already picked out for you...huh? Ok, so everything was preselected and the colors fell somewhat into what I wanted, but not entirely, however she assured me it would look great on me. First off, my eyebrows looked awful..I looked like Groucho Marx and when I asked her to fix them, she removed them, and then put them back the same exact way? UGH! The eyeshadow looked ok, the eyeliner was unbelievably thick, even after me saying I wanted it thin. To make matters worse, after she put on my lashes, she added even more liner making it look like thick black bars. She then applied a ton of foundation to my face consisting of about 4 - 5 layers. It was about 4 shades darker then my skin tone and was not blended at all into my neck. She then put globs of gloss on my lips to the point where it was running off my lower lip. It was awful. When she was done I talked to her about the eybrows again, the liner and the concealer. I was told that she could change it up for my wedding. ????? Was I just supposed to trust that she would do it correctly on the big day? Sorry..but I dont think so. By the time I walked out to my car, the lashes were already pulling off of my lids and the liner she put on my waterline..which I hated, was running into my eyes.
I looked like a circus clown. To make matters worse, the trial was on the expensive side and it really upset me that I paid someone to do that to my face. I went straight home and washed my face. :/ Sorry for the rant, but I was just so dissapointed!

That really sucks.  I am really sorry this happened to you!  Was this your first trial?? How does one pre-select colors for you??  That's crazy!  I want to know who this is so badly. haha

That sounds terrible. Sorry for the experience.  Don't trust her for your wedding.  She is supposed to blow you away making you want to keep the makeup on until the evening right?

    Bah.

Yes, it was my first trial and a complete waste of time and money. It was awful. She works for Mac and does her trials at the Mac counter on her off days. I was so embarassed walking out through Macys afterwards. My eyes were tearing like crazy bc she got so much makeup in them. What really annoyed me is that she presents herself as a professional makeup artist, but in talking to her during my trial, she said she isn't licensed and that she never learned how to do make up professionally but just kinda figured it out. That annoyed me bc I felt totally mislead. I don't want to slam her on here..but at the same time I really dont want someone else to fall into this trap. I mean, I have a small thin scar that runs through my eyebrow that I always fill in with pencil, takes 2 seconds and she didnt even do that! I mean, come on!

Honestly, I left there feeling like I'd just been totally duped and untrusting of paying someone else..the feeling sucks.

I'm so sorry this happened!!  If she isn't licensed, maybe there is someone you can report her to?  I would hate to see this happen to other people...

I will be doing my own makeup, so at least I don't have to worry about that!  Best of luck finding a new MUA, I'm sure the next one will be fine.

I used a Mac Makeup Artist, Marty, she was FANTASTIC.

My mom also paid for a trial because she doesn't wear a ton of makeup and wanted to be comfortable, My mom decided she wanted to use brownish/black eye liner instead and she switched it up for her no problem.

If you want her info PM me.

Aww Im so sorry- I totally feel your frustration. I was planning on doing my own makeup for this reason, so I was afraid I wouldnt like how the MUA did it. But I decided to get someone since I feel like their makeup would last longer for me. I have a birthmark on my face which was very important to me would be covered 100% at all times so I get what you are saying about the scar, etc. I had a makeup trial with both Jillyan Scarpa and Derya at http://www.thenewjerseymakeupartist.com/ but did an awesome job, really listened to me and the trials were affordable (in the $50-$70 range). Maybe try them? I hope this helps!

I'm so sorry you had to experience this! That's what the trial is for. I've found that some of the MAC folks know how to do one style of makeup really well, but if you want something different, it's a little challenging. I had 5 makeup trials (2 with one MUA because I really liked her and wanted it to work) before I found my MUA. It's definitely expensive, and shouldn't be so hard because you know exactly what you want. I can PM you some info if you like. Luckily, you still have some time. Good luck and hang in there!
