Inner Envelope

I have a question about my invitations.  For the outter envelopes we are using clear address labels with a pretty cursive font.  As far as the inner envelope, what do you suggest?  Do I get a calligrapher to do the inner envelope?  Can you use the inner envelope to keep everything organized but leave it blank?  My invitations are rectangle shaped invitations but also have a piece of vellum and what they call a half moon holder in which the intivation will go in.

Any advice would be much appreciated.  I am clueless when it comes to this!!  :)

These are great Qs..... you should also post this on the Invites and Paper board.  I posted a bunch of Qs there and they were VERY helpful.  Good luck!

You can do whatever you want.  Of course, there are specific etiquette rules to follow if that's what you want to do, but when push comes to shove it all depends on how important those rules and traditions are to you as well as how important the invitaitons are to you.

For us, calligraphy was definitely out of the question because, in our minds, it was an unncessary expense.  Others, however, will say that it's crucial for the invitations to be as traditional and elegant as possible because they are the guests' first "look" at your wedding.

Regarding labels on the outer envelopes and writing names on the inner envelopes, we're printing names and addresses directly onto our outer envelopes and we're printing more casual versions of our guests' names onto the inner envelopes (I think it's nice to have the names on the inner envelopes instead of just leaving them blank).

I wouldn't use clear labels on the outer envelope for wedding invitations, because they're like Scotch Tape or clear bra straps - you won't be fooling anyone. If you must use labels, print them onto white labels (if your envelopes are white, of course). But since you're doing the tissue paper, stick-on labels just aren't right - it's like wearing your everyday shoes on the Oscars red carpet. If you can print the addresses directly onto the envelope, that's significantly preferable.

As to your main question, I think you should put people's names on the inner envelope. It's a nice, personal touch, and it can give the guest the impression that the suite was packed just for them, instead of systematically stuffed into the larger envelopes.

Can you print right on the envelopes instead of a label? I think the inner envelopes specify exactly who is invited e.g. outer envelope might say Mr & Mrs. Smith and inner envelope can say Uncle Mike, Aunt Sally and Joe (kid).

<div>I'll admit: I'm very picky about invitations.  I would think that it would be really weird to get an invitation with calligraphy on the inner envelope and clear labels on the outer envelopes because to me they're on the far extremes of formality and niceness.  I would wonder why the couple didn't pick an intermediate route that looked nice on both envelopes.</div><div>
</div><div>Of course, not everyone wants to opt for the expense, formality, or bother of calligraphy.  But is there a reason why you wouldn't print directly on the envelopes or wouldn't do something nice with a non-clear label like wraparound labels?  There are ways to make printing look formal and nice enough for wedding invitations -- but clear labels are probably the hardest way to do that.  And the outer envelope is what people are going to pick out of their mailbox and think "Wow!  Pretty!" or "Wow, these people didn't make much of an effort" (which hey -- some don't.  but that may also set low expectations for the wedding).</div>

I actually found it easier to print directly onto the envelope and maybe you could do this for both the inner and outer env.  I feel with labels, it is hard to get them perfectly straight and they just annoy me sometimes.  Okay for a birthday party or whatever, but even then they drive me crazy.  (Please know it is not the way that they look, for me, it is the hassle of having to put them on.)  Anyway,  I agree that it would be weird to have labels on the outer and calligrahpy on the inner.

I say just print directly on to them both.  It is super easy to do.  As long as your printer is set to the size of your Env.  it will print perfect everytime.  I also but the return address on there as well.
