Where is everyone going for their honeymoon???

Our dream is to go to Tahiti…. those overwater bungalows are calling my name. But that might be too pricey for us.  We’re also looking into Hawaii (I just got a really great quote from Costco Travel), but outside of those two places, I’m at a loss for ideas (looking to do 10-14 days).  Where are you / did you go for your honeymoon?

We're going on a Southern Caribbean cruise. We wanted to do the British Isles but it was just too expensive.

We just went to Hawaii and booked through Costco.  We stayed at the Fairmont in Maui and the Grand Hyatt in Kauai.  There were some children at both hotels, but they have adult pools so you can escape the children.  We had a great time at both places!

Sharstin-- I know, FI had his heart set on Tahiti, but when we were really looking at the prices and time it would take to get there, it was just too much.  I also looked at the Cook Islands which are cheaper, but you can only fly there on certain days of the week.  For Hawaii, we went there in August, so there were quite a few families, but we saw lots of couples as well.  In Maui we stayed at the Sheraton (Kaanapali Beach) which was nice, lots of families though. We did go to the Grand Wailea for dinner one night and it was a gorgeous hotel, very grand and Wailea is quieter than Kaanapali Beach.  Maui had the most night life out of the islands we went to, but everything closes early, around 10:30/11.  If you go to the Big Island, you have to stay at the Fairmont Orchid.  It was such a beautiful hotel and very quiet/relaxing.  They have a beautiful spa and fitness center.  In Kauai, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt.  There was an adult pool so we lounged there a lot, and the grounds are gorgeous! I really loved Kauai.

Also, FI booked the trip on expedia, and was able to get great deals on everything. I know Costco has great deals, too (like you said).  He booked the trip in February I think, and ended up switching hotels because the prices for the Fairmont (for example) dropped significantly.  I personally don't have the patience to sit on the phone like he does and negotiate for better prices, but I just thought I would throw that tip out there too!

We tried twice to go to Cap Juluca in Anguilla but had to cancel because of hurricanes.  So we went to Barbados instead (out of the hurricane belt) and loved it!  We stayed at the Crane hotel.  Here are some pics:

We went to Cabo San Lucas and loved it!
We've also been to Riveria Maya a couple times and it is great there as well.

If you go to Riveria Maya - you could stay somewhere like this, for much less money than Tahiti or Hawaii:

We went to Belize and absolutely LOVED it. We knew right off that we wanted a super chill honeymoon that was just lay on the beach/by the pool and browse the local shops and that is exactly what we got.

I'd say Costa Rica if you want more of the adventure/exploring type of honeymoon or there are some lovely parts of Mexico if you want a lay on the beach and relax vibe.

We stayed at the Occidental Grande in Aruba for 10 days and it was amazing!  I believe that Aruba and Barbados are outside of the hurricane belt if that's something that concerns you.

Sharstin--- We were originally thinking of going to Tahiti, but it ended up being over budget.  We are now looking into St. Lucia and Turks and Caicos. We actually went to Hawaii last summer and had a great time! There are some great secluded spots if you want to get away from the touristy parts.

Cindy-- That picture from RIviera Maya is spectacular! Which resort is that? Thanks!

I have no idea! FI will be starting his medical residency in July and I have no clue whether he'll be able to get the time off after our wedding! If he does though, we'll probably go to either Aruba or St. Lucia. Can't go wrong any of these places PPs have mentioned, though!

Thanks everyone!!  We are trying to stay out of the caribbean because it will be peak hurricane season. We like the idea of having a lot of relaxing time, but also mixing in some nature/adventure trips (hikes, diving, etc.).

BeachLover - I know, Tahiti is just too much.  You need a budget over $10k, which I think is ridiculous!!!  And then the food there is really pricey too.  Hawaii is still expensive, but much less than Tahiti.  Any recs for hotels that have a more couples vibe (less families)?

Cindy - That pic is gorgeous!  What hotel is that??

Check out Cabo San Lucas then.. it is on the Pacific side of Mexico, so it won't be hurricane season...plus they haven't had any rain there since September 2010.

We are going to Hawaii...a week in Maui at the Westin and one week in Kauai at the Grand Hyatt...just booked a couple of days ago!
  • We did Hawaii: 3 nights in Oahu at the Outrigger Reef, 5 nights in Kauai at the Grand Hyatt, and 5 nights in Maui and the Fairmont.

It was fantastic.  We booked with a travel agent and didn't have to worry about a thing.  If you want her info let me know.

FI & I are staying mainland as well. We are going to Traverse City, Michigan. it has everything we want: wineries, beaches, quaint quiet areas, and best of all, FI &  I are huge Ranger fans and every year there like a minor league tournament there so we will be experiencing that as well.
