Changing name/passport question...

I have yet to change my name and am getting ready to book a vacation.  I'm going to book it under my old/current name, since I haven't changed my name yet/gotten a new passport.

Question is, do I need to wait then to change my name until after the vacation...or can I change it and just use my passport with my maiden name, since that's how I will book it.  Will they know that I've changed my name legally. I think not, but just want to make sure whether I should wait to change it or not.

Easiest is to wait to change your name until after the trip. (Or, if you have time, change your name and get a new passport.)

You can bring your passport along with your marriage cert, but the TSA agents do have the right to turn you away. I think it's doubtful they would, but they can.

I just changed my passport for our March vacation. I am going to bring the marriage cert just in case, but I changed everything else months ago.

How would the TSA agents know that I've legally changed my name? Would they?

Chels, can't you just use your driver's license with your maiden name & book the ticket that way also?

  • edited December 2011

i would wait until after your vaca if you havent done any name changing yet...and if you are doing e-tickets - they check your ticket w/ your passport so your name has to match...but then again you are typing in the passenger name manualy-

idk - id just wait lol

    sorry no help here

My passport has my maiden name and I'm traveling to Dominican Republic, so I need my passport.  I just figured that if I book with my maiden name and my passport has my maiden name, even if I change my name with SS, DMV, etc I will be fine.

Yeah totally - that's what I meant - bring all doc's in your maiden name. I'm sure TSA won't know legally your name was changed.  God forbid you go to change the passport and it doesn't come back to you in time.

If you want, you can start changing your name on your other documents (ss, DL), but keep your passport as is like you've suggested and use that for your trip.  When you change your name on your passport, you have to send your old one in (they will send it back but you'll be without it for several weeks).

    Perfect, that's what I was hoping/thinking.

Part of me also doesn't want to get a new passport before it expires. Waste of money imo! haha

OoOo, Chelsea - where are you staying in DR?  A bunch of my friends and I trying to book a trip for June to an all-inclusive resort and trying to keep it under $750-800pp (flying from newark).

I still haven't changed my passport yet, but I have changed just about everything else, so I guess I will need to change my passport too.  I don't want to risk bringing my marriage certificate as proof and the TSA denying it.

    Thanks!

We're staying at the Majestic Colonial most likely.  We've had a lot of good recs for it and it'll be about $1000 pp from Boston, with hotel/airport transfers.  There's tons for less than that, but I get curious as to why they're so cheap then. Just make sure you do your research and check reviews, etc.

If you book your vacation under your maiden name then you don't need to change your passport just yet...or need to bring your marriage certificate. At least that's what it's sounding like.

Change everything else, but don't change your passport.  They look at nothing else besides that.  You will be fine.

chelsea - i'm worried about the cheap prices too, but some of the people I'll be traveling with are on a budget.  I'm still doing research on it.  When are you going?  Post reviews please :)

I thought the TSA asks to see a driver's license too?  Besides a name change, I also changed my address from NJ to NY, so I don't want to risk any trouble.  I'm gonna get crackin' on updating my passport.  It needs to get done eventually anyway.

We're going end of May...it's can't come soon enough!

Since when does TSA ask for a license?  I traveled in November for my HM and I don't recall them asking for a license.  And changing your address shouldn't matter...your address isn't on your passport or tickets.

They only ask for a license when traveling domestically...international you need to show your passport and that is all they will look at.

If you show a passport that's all you need. Some people don't even have licenses.
