Question about 1st dance song

So FI and I picked out a song and we let me mom hear it. The song is come on get higher lyrics by matt nathanson. We decided on it after we were out on our 1 year to our wedding anniversary and we heard it at the bar. His face lit up and told me he wanted to have this as our 1st song. He also said he was playing it on the night we got engaged, which I dont remember that haha. Anyway, my mom said since it starts out saying I miss the sound of your voice, etc its a breakup song. My FI said he thinks it just means you could be away for 5 seconds and I miss you, etc. We love the song, so it doesnt really matter, but I dont want our guest to all be like WTF when they hear the song. What do you guys think?

I don't really pay attention to the lyrics when I'm watching a couple's first dance. Especially because the DJ is usually talking over the first few words to introduce the couple.

We picked a Metallica song as our first dance. There was some hemming and hawing amongst our parents about it, but we didn't hear a peep out of them on the wedding day, and most people were awww'ing and taking photos of us. We had one whole table of friends cheering REALLY loudly when the DJ announced that it was a Metallica song, lol.

I'd have to agree that it's a break up/make up sex song lol. But who cares if it's the song you want. The only time I really notice the song/lyrics is the father/daughter dance b/c people tend to pick from pretty effin creepy songs for it that are seriously inappropriate (see: Brown Eyed Girl - "Makin' love in the green grass, Uh behind the stadium, With you my brown eyed girl" so not ok to dance with your dad to that song lol)

Agree with PP. It isnt about meaning for everyone else, its about the meaning for you two. So keep the song.

hahaha that is creepy- a our pre-wedding party my dad and I were kidding around dancing to i'm bring sexy back and we keep teasing my mom that we are going to do that as a father-daughter dance haha

But its true w/ songs, so many songs that are listed as wedding songs, like I will always love you, are breakup songs. I personally love the aerosmith song I dont wanna miss a thing, but FI hates it and said unless a rocketship takes off at the wedding we cant use it haha and some other songs, like Amazing are great but just so overdone. He doesnt care about a lot of stuff w/ the wedding, so something that actually makes his face light up means a ton to me and if this is the song that does it, I wanna have it for him :)

    Thanks for all your help!

Agree, I never really pay attention enough to the lyrics of the first dance. It's meaningful to you two- who cares what everyone else thinks. I think it's sweet he rememebered that and then cared enough to want that as your first song.

Use the song that is most meaningful to you both. I know I don't pay attention to the lyrics.

dh wanted to use "nothing compares 2 u" as our wedding song, to which i said no because it was a breakup song...
however, he wanted to use the hawaiian version from forgetting sarah marshall....
in retrospect, i think we should have gone with that..its a pretty song, and really, noone pays attention to lyrics...

and btw, i love that matt nathanson song....i had considered it for a bit myself on account everytime we went to the movies at the plaza, that song would play before all the movies and through the lobby...and we go to the movies a lot, and i have the cd, so when i hear the song i think of dh....never thought of the lyrics, just think it's a pretty song...

It's much more about what the song means to you than the words of the lyrics.

You pick the song you want.  Don't let anyone tell you what kind of song to have, it is what has meaning and importance to you.  The opening line of our wedding song was
"I'm here again,1000 away from you, a broken mess, just shattered pieces of who I am"  This line has a lot of meaning to us but a lot of people thought that it was a sad song, but the hook is "Then I see your face, I know I'm finally yours, I find everything I thought I lost before, You call my name, I come to you in Pieces, So you can make me whole"

It was important to us and being that we were the ones getting married, we just ignored others.

I think most first dance songs are that way -- they don't make sense, or are breakup songs, etc., but the couples picked them because they are pretty or bring back memories or like the band.  I wouldn't worry about it.

My husband danced with his mom to The Summer Wind(s?), which is about "sweethearts" who break up, and it talks about kissing and such.  But she really likes Sinatra.  It happens.
