CHECKS

Is it mandatory that we get a joint account?  I am paying the bills for the wedding out of my personal account.  How do deposit the checks that are written to the both of us?

The easiest thing fi and i did before we where even engaged was to move to the same bank I have my account he has his and we have a joint account all free checkings through pnc bank so if we ever need to transfer money it can be done through that joint account and if we get checks in who evers name it can go there as well good luck

If checks are made out to the both of you I think that either of you can deposit them.  We have a joint passbook savings and whenever we need to pay for something we just take the money out and bring it to each vendor.  You don't have to have a joint anything if you don't choose to or if your method is working thus far :)

This exactly what we did. We both use our own checking accounts and did a joint savings account. It's nice because we have our own accounts but have access to each others.

I work for PNC bank and to deposit checks made out to two people, you need to have a joint account. They can't deposit it into just one person's account. My FI and I opened a joint savings account together to save money for the wedding but to also have a place to deposit anything we get for the wedding.

Not true, we don't have any joint accounts and had no issues cashing our wedding checks.  A joint account is not necessary, so do what works best for you.

If the checks are made out to you OR your husband, there is no issue
If the checks are made out to you AND your husband, you both may need to go to the bank to show ID, but they checks can be cashed or deposited to any account
The worst thing that you can do is get a joint account with your maiden name and then have checks made out in your married name......that is a can of worms, which is why I don't recommend getting a joint account until after you change you name.  And there is no reason why you can't cash or deposit your checks before that to either of your accounts.

There's no issue changing your name on a joint account. I'm not sure how it works in other banks, I know in PNC at least, you need to have a joint account to deposit a check made to two people. Cashing is a different story. But in any event, do whatever you feel will work best for you two! :)
