train station photos

FI and I are scheduled to take engagement photos this coming weekend to get a feel for working with our photographer for our wedding next month. I love others photos that I've seen taken at old train stations or with train cars, etc. We're using Robert Wayne Photography which is out of Franklin. He's about 45 minutes west of where we are from so I'm not familiar with his area. When I told him about wanting to try a train station he suggested Mount Arlington train station, but it's active so I don't know if it will be exactly what I'm looking for. Now  that I'm trying to look for these types of photos to figure out some locations I can't find any. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mt Arlington is an active train station but may not be busy on weekends ( I don't think it runs on weekends).

They have a train museam on rt 10 in morris plains I believe...look it up, with old cars, etc.  Again not sure if a permit is required.

You are not supposed to shoot on train tracks, I got a warning and booted off last time I tried to do that.

Are you looking for an old train station? We took our e-pics at Liberty State Park and there's a deactivated, old train station there where we got some nice photos. And I don't think you need a permit.

We took our post-ceremony photos at Liberty State Park, because we thought the old station would be perfect in case it rained. The area in front of the tracks was open when I scouted the location the Sunday before our wedding, but it was closed off when we actually went to take photos (which was no big loss, as it didn't rain after all). If you need the indoor location, you should try to call ahead to see when it's open.

There are also tracks outside the station building, with an old locomotive you can climb on.

I couldn't tell you if there's anything similar closer to you, but good luck!

    Posted by mbcdefg
Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I was thinking Hoboken would be great too, but that area is over an hour from the photographer so it's too far. I was hoping to find something similar but closer to him in Franklin.

Thanks so much everyone! It's weird I only saw the post I quoted and then when I refreshed just saw the others. He mentioned the train museam as well, so I'll take a look. Good to know about the tracks. It definitely isn't the best thing to be taking photos on with it being active!

Make sure you check to see if you need a permit to shoot in the train station.  I know in Hoboken you do so you may need one at others.

I remember going to that train musuem a few years ago.  While it was a neat place to visit, I didn't think it was necessary a beautiful place to visit.  They also have very limited hours so it's not likely you'll be able to shoot there without people in the background.

For some reason, I kinda recall some neat old stations in the Wycoff/Allendale area, but I'm not sure.

Has anyone heard of the Boonton Train Station? It's abandoned and looks to actually have an old train on the tracks which is what I really wanted.

Looks like a pretty wild spot.  I know where this is, but I'm not familiar with the actual spot.  But it sure is different; what kind of look were you going for with your engagement shoot?

    Posted by GolfChick78
Since we've already had the typical types of engagement photos done and will again for our wedding I wanted to do something different. Not sure what FI will think, but I think it's a neat idea. I want the photos to have more of an edgy look to them. Our relationship was also long distance for the first 2 1/2 years where I took the train many times into Hoboken to then switch to the Path to then pick up a bus to head up to Boston. So in a way it's also symbolic.
