Centerpiece confusion

We are getting married next August, but I started my floral hunt yesterday.  I just wanted to get a feel for pricing, styles, colors, etc.  I thought I knew what I wanted but now Im confused.

I would like our reception to have a vintage romance feel.  So, I wanted muted colored flowers (for the centerpieces) with lots of candles on the tables.  The FI and I also want to use up-lighting to warm the space.

My confusion is on the height of the centerpieces.  Should they be tall or short?  I thought tall would look more modern.  I thought low centerpieces created more intimacy, but now I not sold on this notion.

We are having our reception at Il Villaggio.

Any opinions? What are you guys doing?

I'd say for Il Villaggio (from what I've seen online) tall would work best. What does your budget allow for? If you're really torn on the two you could always do a mix of tall and short.

I am getting married at Il'Villaggio's next July and I agree with pp.  I am definitly going to get tall center pieces.  The ceilings at Il'Villaggio are so high that I think the low ones would just get lost in the room.

I can see how tall centerpieces make more of a statement for a space like Il'Villaggio's. However, I am in a ballroom myself and using lower centerpieces. My wedding is more english garden so I want it to feel more romantic and intimate. I just met with a florist this past weekend. She said low centerpieces would work really nicely even though the ceilings were high. But you can also do a mix of high/low as an option if you weren't totally sold on just low centerpieces. Go with what makes you the happiest.

Thank you ladies.. Unfortunately, I dont know what would make me happy.  I am having a hard time visualizing the room with the high or low centerpieces.

I am sure it will be fine.. :)

I personally like low centerpieces. I hate when I go to a wedding and I can't see the person across the table that I am trying to talk to.

We are doing a mixture of highs and lows.  It gives the room more texture. It also fits into our budget more.

I did low ones.. I agree that I don't like not being able to see around the big ones and I also think that high ones are more modern.  I had all pink roses with gold sprayed berries- very vintage-y looking.  If you're still not sure, maybe you could have her make one of each and bring them to the venue when there is not an event going on to see what you think.  Also, maybe see if you can find picutres of your venue all done up from another wedding.

We had a high, glass ceiling but I love low, densely packed centerpieces... I don't think the room looked empty; then again, maybe it was also that I did jewel-tones/packed in a lot of color so it's not like attention would be on "empty space."

I think if you go with flowers you love, regardless of tall or low, the space will look great.
