Is this tacky....?

When I went to see Ballyowen, there were decorations from the last wedding still hanging.  I like the paper lanterns (which is what they had up).  But, I thought I could DIY a bunch of carnation pomanders in our colors and hang them w/ fishing line so they have a "floating" feel.  Please stop me from running w/ this if it's tacky...

I think I need to see a picture.  I think it may look kinda strange, but I'm just having a hard time picturing it.

I can't find one where they used clear line, only ribbon.  Which is why I thought... maybe it's awful and that's why I can't find photos!  Here's pomanders hanging...  http://ladyrebecca.com/wedding/bio/propics/pomanders.jpg

Sounds like it could be pretty and different. Would these be fake flowers? (I'm assuming you're not going to be making them the day before your wedding.) Who's going to hang them for you?
  • edited December 2011
Haha... no, I am crazy enough to make them the day before our wedding.

On second thought, I could do fresh flowers for the church pews and make the others (that will be far away from guests!) with silk flowers.

oh, to answer the question at hand....no, but it depends...do a sample then post a pct.

I'd need to see a picture, if they are hanging the fake flowers won't look as obvious and I wouldn't believe you would be able to see the fishing line...but as I said pics are always good.

(p.s. I'm still waiting to go to my sisters this weekend to check out the dress for you lol)

I think it could look cute depending on the link you had posted.

May as well DIY and give it a try before your wedding to get a feel for it.

I would definitely not do the hanging ones the day before the wedding- go with fake. I like them in the picture, are you looking to hang them in a straight line like that or all over the room at different heights? Either could work

I would maybe look at Style Me Pretty to see if you can find more inspirations?

I like the idea in general, but I don't know how I feel about carnations, particularly fake carnations.  But I agree with the others that doing it the day before may be a problem with real flowers, because they may not look great on the wedding day if they haven't been in water for 24 hours.

You may be very, very busy the day before your wedding.  I felt like I spent the whole day running around to get things done before the rehearsal, and I didn't leave any time-consuming DIY projects for that day.

Also, how high are these things going to be and who is hanging them up?  We looked into hanging paper lanterns at our venue (our reception was in a tent) and the ceiling was so high that they would have had to bring in a cherry picker to hang them up.  We decided that definitely wasn't worth it for our space.

Thanks for the insight and ideas! I asked FI and he said... hmm ::shrug:: so that was unhelpful.  The ceiling is not that high probably 9 feet, it can be done with a regular ladder.  I want them all at different lengths, the fake flowers should be ok but I am going to do some mock-ups.  I still have not figured out who will hang them.  Going to a meeting at ballyowen tomorrow...

I will post when I make some samples!

Heyyy when is your wedding day? I'm getting married there October 10! I have SOO many questions!!

if anyone reads this who has had their wedding there, feel free to answer.

1.) How are tables arranged? Where would the sweetheart table go?
2.) Where does the DJ set up?
3.) Should I opt for extra lighting from the DJ? It seems a little dark?
4.) They told me a max of 170 and I'm right around that. It seems like its going to be a little tight...any thoughts?
    5.) How are the bathrooms?
6.) Did they finally get AC?
7.) Does anyone have any pictures?
8.) How was the food? I'm going for a tasting soon..
9.)How was the service the day of the wedding?
10.) Do they provide a shuttle to the hotel?

I would love to see pictures of your idea :-) Hope it worked out well!

    Hi Kelly!
I am a ballyowen bride also! My date is 10/22/10.

I have been looking everywhere for reviews, ideas on how to decorate since the space is so simple yet rustic. I found some great pics at this link...

    To answer your questions:

1.) How are tables arranged? Where would the sweetheart table go?The planner Julie recommends that the table be set up against the back wall so that your photos come out nicer.2.) Where does the DJ set up?To the right of the sweetheart table which I still have an issue with. Having a DJ in the corner? hmmm3.) Should I opt for extra lighting from the DJ? It seems a little dark? The DJ company we are using threw in up-lighting for $150. You can choose any color and it gives a soft glow in every corner of the room. 4.) They told me a max of 170 and I'm right around that. It seems like its going to be a little tight...any thoughts?5.) How are the bathrooms?I haven’t seen them for myself and am nervous6.) Did they finally get AC?No AC yet7.) Does anyone have any pictures?8.) How was the food? I'm going for a tasting soon..I didn’t know they offered tastings? How did you coordinate that?9.)How was the service the day of the wedding?10.) Do they provide a shuttle to the hotel?Yes if you have at least 20 rooms booked the shuttle is free from either minerals or the resort.

Hello Ladies! I too am an October Ballyowen Bride. October 2nd to be exact. I just wanted to jump on with some info. Julie set up our tasting for us. The food is AWESOME! Also, we were told that if we had 10 rooms booked that the shuttle would be provided for free. The bathrooms at the reception pavillion aren't bad but a little plain. We are going to add some candles, flowers and a basket full of goodies that are guests can use to freshen up.

I'm looking for ways to decorate still so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

    Thanks!

    hi laura!
    yes the food was great!!
    very pleased.
I havent seen the bathroom yet so I feel a bit better to know that they are not awful.

where are you having your reheasal? the surrounding area is a bit bare restaurant wise but i may be traveling from another direction.
We may just have it at minerals although our budget may not allow it.

Glad to put your mind at ease a bit. We are having our rehearsal at Portofino's Restaurant in Oak Ridge as it's not too far and it's down the street from our house. Most of our attendants are in the Morris County area so it is also on their way home. They actually have a sister restaurant close by Ballyowen it's called Milano's and it's in Hardyston. They serve italian food that is the best we've ever had. It's worth a shot for you to check it out online. There prices are really good for the amount of food they serve. We looked at having our dinner at both Minerals and even the pub at Ballyowen but it ended up being too much money.

    Good luck!

I was at Ballyowen thi past weekend to look at site for my daghters wedding which is Oct. 23, 2010.  It was decorated with chinese lanterns and looked great.   Lori in charge of weddings there told me the wedding from the nite before left them up for the wedding the next day to use.  I am wondering if you made your decision about the ceiling for your wedding. Perhaps being able to so something similar.
