How to pick a DJ?

I am just wondering if anyone has advice on how to pick a DJ.  I feel like I am blindly picking DJs - how am I supposed to know if I like their style?  I had a friend refer a DJ to me but he has chosen not to return my phone calls or emails so now I am on my own.  If anyone has a suggestion for how to pick one, or even a good DJ under $1000 that would be great!!  Thanks!

I contacted a couple DJs that were highly recommended on this board. They both seemed nice (talked to them via phone and e-mail), but we went with the one who was less expensive. We met him for the first time at the reception and he was great.

The basic package was a little under $1K when we booked in 2009.

I also had a lot of trouble picking a dj because I didn't like any of the ones my friends or family had used.  I relied on the lovely ladies on this board who recommended Danny C.  I would suggest you call him but he's a bit over your budget.

Elite Entertainment has a package in the $900 range. They weren't my style, but they have great reviews.

Truthfully, my fiance and I talked about it, figured out what we were looking for from a DJ and then I hit the reviews online and started calling around and then made appts with the ones we liked on the phone. Everyone we went to showed us video of MC's to choose from, had a show room to show lighting packages and most offerred online accounts where we could customize our special requests/ first dance etc. selections. We ended up going with Gemini Productions. Happy hunting!!!! :)

    I wouldn't recommend the Pros...
We met with a few different companies, and watched the videos to see which emcee's style we liked, and then chose that person. I wouldn't pick a company without being able to meet with the emcee you'll be using first (before signing a contract), and making sure you like their style. Just because you might like the "company" doesn't mean you'll like the emcee you get, unless you get to pick them yourself.

I found that alot of the DJs I was looking at were around the same price.  I asked my venue if they had a company they recommend and they gave me a list of a bunch of vendors they recommend not just for a DJ but florist, invitations, hair, photography, all that stuff.

I went to a bridal show and really hit it off with a DJ there.  We stayed for their presentation and then set up an appointment with him.  We really got along and since the prices were around the others I was seeing we went with him.  I also got a discount because this company was on the list my venue suggested.

I've asked DJs if they will have any shows or be at any bridal shows so that you can get an idea of what they are like.  A few I have liked on the phone but then saw them in person and they were not my style.  Like the lovely man that was practically screaming into the mic or the other man who was basically eating the mic.  No fun.
