Inner Envelopes

Do people still send out invitations with inner envelopes?  I was told they don't use them that much anymore.  Thanks

I used them because they came with the package we got.   It isn't a necessity but people still do it.  The last several invites I received for other weddings had them

I've never received one, personally, and I don't see the need for them. I wouldn't want to waste the money or the paper on them.

Didn't use them, and haven't received any invites with them in years.

That's crazy that a few of you have said that you haven't received invitations with them in years.  Was it because you've gotten lots of pocketfold invitations?  We've received a few pocketfold invitations in the past few years, and those don't typically come with inner envelopes (because the pocketfolds are the inner envelopes, more or less).  Pretty much every girl here seems to do pocketfolds, so they seem to be very popular.  We've only gotten a few of them though.

But at least 9 out of 10 of the traditional invitations we've received have had them (and the one invitation I can think of that we received that didn't have one was a pretty cheap looking invitation that I don't think the couple put much thought into (judging by the very obvious typos and the overall crapiness of the wedding itself)).  They're not a necessity so of course you can cut them if they don't fit in your budget, but they're still widely used in formal invitations.

I agree, I cant see why you wouldnt use them (again, as pp said, unless they are pocket invites). I think it looks super messy when you just throw things into the envelope, but that is my opinion. These are formal (semi-formal) invitations, I think they are a definite must.

I have only received one (non-pocketfold) invitation with an inner and outer envelope out of the past 7-8 weddings I have been to.  I think if you are using a calligrapher, you want to have inner and outer, but I am not using an inner envelope.

It used to be used so the printing didn't get messed up from hand calligraphy (or so I've been told), but I know a lot of couples opt not to do that (can get pricey).

Our invitations had inner envelopes.  We had a traditional and semi-formal wedding (we had a calligrapher address the outer and inner envelopes).

This is some historial background from the Crane website.
"Wedding invitations were once delivered by hand. If you were a bride back in those days, your footman delivered your invitations to your guests' homes. Their servant received the invitation and removed it from its mailing envelope (an envelope much too pedestrian for your guests to handle themselves). The servant then presented the invitation to your guests in its pristine inside envelope. Because the invitation was already at its destination, the inside envelope had only the names of your guests written on it. The address was no longer needed. It just had to be directed to the appropriate members of the household. "

Although pocket style invitations are all the rage right now, my friends haven't been choosing them as wedding invitations.  I've seen more letterpress.  Most of the wedding invites we have received as of late have included inner envelopes, but I think it is a matter of choice, style, and budget.
