How much is too much...

for a hotel room? I have just started to look into the hotel room block for our OOT guests. The two closest locations are both Marriott, a Residence Inn and Courtyard. I was quoted prices for the Residence Inn from 199-209 and for the Courtyard 164-174. Does this seem like a lot to you? I was quite taken aback by it. I called the person and asked if this was the discounted rate which she is going to check on. But I wanted to see if this seemed in line with what you other ladies were quoted. TIA!

I personally will never stay at a hotel (assuming its not a destination wedding of course) for anything more than $150 a night. Thats a personal choice though... I don't drink a lot... so driving home is not a big deal to me. Other people who do drink may feel differently.
That being said, our hotel rate (down the shore in August on a Friday night) was $119-$129 a person. (It was the Mariott in Tinton Falls.) So yes, I think you can do better. Good luck!

It is a lot, but is your wedding in DC?, because than it seems okay for that area.  Our was $119 a night.

Which area is this in?  Sometimes there's no good way around it because there are no cheap hotels in the area, but at the very least in that case I'd try to find *somewhere* decent within a half an hour that is $150 or less (or even better if it is $125 or less) so those who need hotels and can't afford $175+ have a choice.  Doesn't have to be your main hotel block hotel though.

Where is your reception?  Maybe others know of places in the area?

At our hotel, the regular rate is $189 per night, and they were going to give us a discount bringing it down to $170 per night. That number freaked me out so I called up and asked if there was any way they could lower the price to make it more affordable since we would have so many people from out of town. The GM brought it down to $159, which is still in the high range IMO but much better than where it was (but we are having our reception at the hotel, so that's probably why they brought the price down lower for us).

I attended a wedding this summer that had a room block, and their rate was $159....so it made me feel a little better that other people have rates at other hotels that are just as high. The lower you can find, the better.

One of my hotel blocks is a Marriott Residence Inn. It's on the same property as our venue, I was quoted $179-189 per night. We decided to do two hotel blocks. One at that location and another about 10 mins away that provides shuttle service. That hotel is $105 a night.

Maybe you can set up something like that? Where are you having your wedding?

It sounds like a lot I would be upset if I had to pay that.

My wedding is at Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune NJ. It is not located by the beach and it is not during high season. It is mid-May prior to Memorial Day. I asked if they could lower the price in anyway b/c there really aren't a lot of options around there. I will see what the new price is when I receive the email. I thought it was a lot. I was expecting the $150 range at the most. I know there is a new Holiday Inn Express which I will check into that is close. I just don't know if I can offer a shuttle service if the hotel doesn't offer one. I am on a limited budget hence why I don't want to go further out of the area. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Ours originally wanted $140, but my cousin was able to get them down to $134 for their wedding and my FI was able to get them down to $125.  Many hotels need business at this time, tell them you got a better off from a different hotel chain and see if they'll come down at all.

We got married at the Westin in Princeton and our room block rate was $135 per night.

our room block is 110 a night i believe at the hampton inn

Mine was $180 a night.  I thought it was expensive but it was in August and it really was the only hotel around.  Most of my guests stayed in the hotel so i guess even if it was a lot, it wasnt expensive enough to keep people from staying.

See if your venue works with a hotel, they can usually get you a cheaper rate. If the Marriot won't work with you and the H.I.E won't be ready in time, look into taking over a Bed & Breakfast in the area. Since it's off season you may be able to get one for around $100/night if you book the whole B&B.

    Good Luck!

I am using a Holiday Inn and it is $99 per night, includes breakfast for two and shuttle service for our guests. It is in Northern Jersey (Mt. Olive) but it still gives you an idea.

My BM just had this problem with her wedding at McCloone's. She ended up booking the Holiday Inn Express in West Long Branch and I have to say it was fantastic. The only issue she had is make sure your guests book early- because the hotel was solid packed sold out and there were guests that weren't able to get a room at all the week before. The qualtiy of the hotel, from a guest's standpoint, was fantastic.

Ultimately, it depends on your guests.  If you're family and friends travel often and are used to paying more for a nicer hotel, then there's nothing wrong with it.  But if you're family is more the Motel6 set, even $150 could be a problem.

May I ask how your BM liked McCloone's? It's on my short list and we've got an appt. with the banquet manager next weekend. Thanks!
