Name Change

Does anyone know if I can change my name to my first name, maiden name and then my new last name.  So... technically I would be dropping my given middle name and using my maiden name as my new middle name.  I am reading a few things and it seems that you can't do that anymore.

Re: Name Change

  • I know someone who just recently did that. Definitely check for sure, but I know she did.

Yep, I did that. I had no issues at either DMV or SS offices.

That's what I plan to do.  I was told that you should keep your maiden name on your SS card to avoid any future confusion.

I believe in NJ you can still do that. The best thing to do is call the SS office to find out for sure.
  • This is what I read... (and I know you can't believe everything you read online)

    Thanks!
  • You can do this but only through the US Court system.  It's a tedious process and will cost anywhere from 200-400 by the end.

I believe you are thinking of a situation where a woman wants to have 2 legal middle names, adding her maiden name to her given middle name. In that case, yes, you have to get a court order. As for the link, keep in mind that is a website that wants to charge you for a service. In the state of NJ, I am legally Joanna Maiden Married. All I had to do was fill that out on the forms at DMV and SS. It is not more complicated than that.

  • jcg98 Last week I tried changing my name to Cindy Maiden Married through SS and they did not allow me to do this change because it first needed to be done with the US Courts.  Since I didn't have a middle name I thought it would be a simple process but that was not the case.  In addition, when you file for a marriage certificate they only allow you to hyphenate which is quite different from adding your maiden name to your middle name.  I've since contacted the County Clerk and they confirmed this.  BTW....shan1214 was correct.  The service may have an interest in business but they are correct in stating that California, NJ, NY, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington do not recognize the abovementioned name change in their standard married name-change process.  You need to get a legal name change and pay additional expenses.

Perhaps because you didn't have a middle name to begin with? At any rate I'm sorry to hear it was such a hassle for you.
